In November of 1946 he was honorably discharged from the army, and he enrolled in the University of Washington (UW) under the G.I. Bill, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in 1949 and a law degree in 1950.
Gates is coauthor, with Chuck Collins, of the book "Wealth and Our Commonwealth: Why America Should Tax Accumulated Fortunes", a defense of the estate tax.

My actual database contains the Gates family history as noted in a 1976 publication entitled "Abel Gates (1793-1870), His Ancestors; His Descendants." In that booklet, his direct line of ancestry was traced back to Thomas Gates, Esq., of Higheaster, Essex England (1327).
Other than my own great-great grandmother (Mary Elizabeth GATES), I have done no specific research on the GATES family, therefore cannot help determine the truth from a good story.
