  Gateshead Thunder - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A competition was held to determine the name for this club, and Gateshead Thunder was born with Shaun McRae as head coach.
Gateshead Thunder claimed to have lost £700,000 during their one year in existence and on Monday 15th November 1999 the board announced they would merge the club with Hull Sharks, accepting a £1.25 million fee from Super League Europe to do so.
The new Gateshead Thunder was accepted back to play in the Northern Ford Premiership on the 2nd August 2000 with a similar bid from Bramley being rejected.

Gateshead Schools under 11's (under the banner of the Thunder) would take on Dublin schools under 11's in a curtain raiser before the 1999 Silk Cut challenge cup final between the London Broncos and the Leeds Rhinos.
With a Thunder sponsored league structure in place and Panthers sitting at the top of two age levels and Rob Best announced as the North East coach of the year a conscious decision was made about the future of direction of the Gateshead club.
This is probably Gateshead’s inner strength because this is not a club of bricks and mortar, its foundations are the coaches, the players and most importantly the parents of the players who give up time and money and who turn up in all kinds of weather to support their kids and encourage the teams.

When our discussions with the Falcons last year eventually came to nothing, at least for the time being, they did indicate that they would be happy to host two or three matches this season.
They are concerned about the wear and tear of their pitch for the 30th July match and may require the ground for a pre season friendly on the second date.

Haven entertained Gateshead Thunder on a dry,cool but sunny afternoon and for the second week running turned in a workmanlike performance to run out easy winner, though in fairness to the visitors they look a much improved team this season.
As hinted Gateshead are a differant proposition this year, evidence their win at Barrow.
They certainly were not afraid to move the ball, and could have scored a try through centre Barnes had he not dropped a pass after finding a hole in the Haven Defence.
