The Gateway Bridge is at the centre of the Gateway Motorway, which skirts the eastern suburbs of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.
It is the crossing of the Brisbane River closest to Moreton Bay and crosses at the Quarries Reach, in between Eagle Farm and Hemmant.
Construction on the Gateway Bridge commenced on 5 June 1980, and was officially commissioned on 11 January 1986.

The Gateway Motorway (Formerly the Gateway Arterial Road) (Metroad 4 to Eight Mile Plains and M1 to Pine River) is a major freeway in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.
At the interchange with the Pacific Motorway at Eight Mile Plains (Pacific Motorway exit 16) the route number changes from Metroad 4 (Logan Motorway - Pacific Motorway) to M1 (Pacific Motorway - Bruce Highway (Gympie Arterial Road)).
The Gateway Bridge is part of the Gateway Motorway and the Motorway provides access to the Port of Brisbane, Brisbane Airport and Brisbane Entertainment Centre.

The Metropolitan District of the Department of Main Roads commissioned Arup to upgrade the roundabout linking the Gateway Motorway with the East-West Arterial and Airport Drive.
Integral to the design was the analysis of traffic flows to determine the number and length of lanes needed to carry the ever-increasing traffic in and out of the airport.
Use of the existing roundabout’s circulating carriageway pavement was maximised by spiralling the entry lanes onto the roundabout.

The motorway begins just to the west of Brisbane City and heads south-east through suburban Brisbane as Metroad-3 (shown above) before intersecting with the Gateway Motorway, where it then passes through Logan, now designated as the M1.
As the motorway continues south, it bypasses Nerang and skirts the western suburbs of the Gold Coast for the remainder of its length before entering New South Wales, where it continues south as the Pacific Highway.
A notable difference on the Pacific Motorway to other motorways in Australia are the use of Exit Numbers - numbers assigned to interchanges by their distance from the Brisbane GPO.

A lot of heavy rain ensued on the Gateway and Logan motorways on the drive west, and by the time we were back on the Ipswich Motorway the storm was well and truly past the New England Highway linking Warwick and Toowoomba and moving into the Lockyer Valley to the south-west of Ipswich.
It was smooth sailing until we finished the Ipswich Motorway and moved into the traffic light section leading to the city.
Entering the Gateway quickly coincided with an easing of the conditions, and an uneventful drive was had until we approached the southern parts of the Caboolture area.

Starting at the northern outskirts of Brisbane, the Bruce Highway is at motorway standard (signposted as M1) as it heads north, bypasses Caboolture and the striking Glass House Mountains before entering the Sunshine Coast hinterland with many sections of the highway passing through lush pastures and rainforests.

At the Thames Gateway Bridge pre-Inquiry meeting on Monday 4th April, the meeting ended in chaos, as the Inspectors walked out after uproar from local residents, and a protester seized the Inspector's microphone, and was chased around their table by an official.
Objector's to the road scheme expressed concerns that many resident's groups opposed to the motorway had not even been informed or consulted about the Inquiry, and that most local people are not even aware that a motorway is coming their way.
They were also concerned that the Inquiry is being fast-tracked, and Objector's are not being given enough time to prepare their case.
