In the lore of the Catholic Church, during the consulship of the Emperor Decius and Vettus Gratus (AD 250), Pope Fabian sent out seven bishops from Rome to Gaul to preach the Gospel: Gatianus to Tours, Trophimus to Arles, Paul to Narbonne, Saturnin to Toulouse, Denis to Paris, Austromoine to Clermont, and Martial to Limoges.
But he overcame all obstacles, according to the Catholic Encyclopedia, gathered apostles round him, whom he sent out to establish churches, and at his death the diocese of Tours was securely established.

The "traditional school", relying on legends that have hitherto not been traced back beyond the twelfth century, have claimed that St. Gatianus was one of the seventy-two disciples of Christ, and was sent into Gaul during the first century by St. Peter himself.
This assertion, which has been refuted by learned and devout writers, is untenable in the face of the testimony of Gregory of Tours.
