  Salon | "Gattaca"
And in this world, even when you're a "Valid," and have had all standard-issue imperfections (myopia, baldness, cardiac flaws) removed from your chromosomes, you must still submit yourself to endless finger-pricking blood tests and urine donations to prove your status; your precious bodily fluids are always on call.
"Gattaca's" protagonist is an "Invalid" masquerading as one of the elite.
For all their dress-for-success genetic programming, "Gattaca's" elites are a strangely neurotic, petulant lot; Jerome, for example, seems to have begun his downward spiral when his athletic prowess won him only a silver medal instead of a gold.

Gattaca is set in "the not-too-distant future," when perfect humans ("valids") are bred by computer and trained for elite jobs, while "Godchildren" -- people born the old-fashioned, imperfect way -- are doomed to marginal lives as cogs in the machine.
Gattaca has few special effects, and its sets are struck from the stark, antiseptic mold of David Cronenberg movies.
Gattaca is the most elegant and hypnotic sci-fi thriller in years -- a vision as dazzling as it is bleak.

"Gattaca" / a review from Christian Spotlight on the Movies
Gattaca offers an opportunity to discuss the effects of prejudice and the reality of genetic determinism (the theory that people are born with certain tendencies, instead of choosing their lifestyle).
I recommend Gattaca for one of those nights when all the videos you are trying to rent are out, and you are trying to fill in the void with something at least half decent.
Gattaca is not so much a scifi flick as a drama presenting the aspirations of an individual against an oppressive social structure.

It is a world where an oppressive system has been created, not by intention, but by the simple choices of individuals and their applications of scientific discovery.
The world of GATTACA is one where peoples' position in society is not determined by their race or gender or social status, but the purity and "perfection" of their genetic code.
The GATTACA world is a world of in which the pace of scientific discovery has been left unchecked by moralistic and ethical debate — whether that is a good thing or a bad thing is left to debate — nevertheless it has spawned a variety of changes in human behaviour.

 Gattaca
GATTACA is a science-fiction film, but unlike the science-fantasy people have come to associate with the genre (Star Trek and Star Wars for instance), it focuses on the ideas of the possible and their implications rather than on silly monsters and overblown special effects.
Gattaca is a fascinating science fiction/mystery movie, set in the 'not too distant future', in which astronauts dress in stylish, roaring-twenties inspired clothing and where the world seems to be finely ordered and sequenced, just like a genetic code.
Gattaca uses some stunning shades of color and hues, which accentuate emotion, convey depth and enhance the visual experience of the movie - be it the Green hues of the beach or the orange hues of the launch pad and external world.

Gattaca's dystopian depiction of "genoism" has been cited by many bioconservative critics in support of their view that liberal eugenics should be discouraged and even banned.
Gattaca’s working title was The Eighth Day, invoking the Biblical creation story of Genesis in which God creates the world in six days before resting on the seventh day.
Gattaca is also reminiscent of Aldous Huxley's novel Brave New World, which explores the development of biological engineering as one of the means of creating a utopian society.

Stephen Nottingham: Screening DNA - Chapter 6
Gattaca, directed and written by Andrew Niccol, explores the implications of genetic modification in a near-future society, where parents have a choice between having a natural baby ("a faith birth") or a genetically enhanced baby.
Gattaca's prediction of a society divided between the genetic haves and the have-nots, however, does rest firmly on trends evident in today's medicine, which is increasingly polarised into public and private healthcare treatment.
(15) However, a Gattaca world is not inevitable, providing legislation is passed and enforced, which protects the individual from organisations who would discriminate against them solely on the basis of their genetic code.

GATTACA depicts a future world in which parents are encouraged to decide the genetic makeup of their offspring before birth.
GATTACA is an example of an extrapolative science fiction film; it projects, from today’s limited use of gene therapy, a world where the new eugenics is a reality.

 In Film Australia movie review
To model a human’s DNA would be the ultimate of playing God – and director Andrew Niccol pretends its all ahead of us "in the not too distant future." But in the cold world of Gattaca, a society that creates a race of "super" people, the word "perfection" has been taken one step too far.
At the time of his birth Vincent’s life expectancy was estimated at a lousy 30 years; so after discovering this and realizing that he would have to live the life of a third rate citizen, his parents agree for genetics to decide the fate of his future brother Hugo.
But Gattaca quite obviously steers clear from all the hows and whys, and presents us not with theories, beliefs and assumptions, but with cold hard imagination and a touch of wonder.

Gattaca (1997) is probably one of the best science fiction films ever made, yet it is a film which has escaped much close scrutiny, and which didn't do terribly well on first release.
This is science fiction operating within the "not-too-distant" future, representing a world which is totally familiar, apart from this central trope of genetic engineering, and the prospect of regular rocket launches to the furthest moons of Saturn.
Gattaca's answer to this is biological, a meticulous series of close up shots of skin flakes, eyelashes, urine, pinpricks of blood - all the substances used for DNA testing.

 Gattaca_essay
The science fiction movie Gattaca is a piece of modern dystopic writing, speculating on a future in which humankind has used a new-found mastery over the human genome to create better, faster, stronger, more-long-lived humans.
For instance, to be hired at Gattaca, the space agency in the movie, as a potential astronaut, the applicant must be “valid.” In actuality the applicant must be better than just “valid.” Therefore, a person’s genes decide what kind of job the person can attain, and therefore how much money a person will make.
Vincent beats the system though, by going through an elaborate process in order to trick the system into believing he is a “valid.” By doing this he proves that this system of “valid” and “in-valid” is not foolproof, and that the gene cannot explain every detail of a person’s life before it has been lived.
