Gatun Dam - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gatun Dam is an earth dam created in the early 20th century as a main element in the construction of the Panama Canal.
The picture shows the dam during full discharge, which is usually during the rainy season (April through December), when the water level of the lake tends to rise above normal limits.
The steel bridge that appears in front of the dam, over the Chagres River, has to be closed to the public during the scheduled discharges, due to the power and height the water gains after going down the spillway.

Single-arch dams are curved upstream and are usually constructed in narrow canyons or gorges where the rocky side walls are strong enough to withstand the tremendous lateral thrust of the dam that is caused by the pressure of the water.
Dams may also be constructed with roller-compacted concrete, in which thin layers of concrete are compacted as if they were earth layers; this produces a far stronger dam, without the need for full forms.
The Oroville Dam, located in California, the tallest in the United States, is 770 ft (235 m) high; the Rogun Dam, in Russia, the tallest in the world, is 1,100 ft (335 m) high.

 Features of Construction
The dam is an artificial ridge formed by pumping an impervious core of dredged clay and sand between parallel ridges of "toes" of rock and earth.
The dam is of earth, protected by rock riprap at the water levels, and is 1,400 feet long, extending from a high hill on the west to the lock, which is set at the base of a high hill on the east.
The lake is impounded by an earth dam 2,700 feet long, connecting with Miraflores Locks from the west, and by a concrete spillway dam to the east of the locks, 500 feet long, on which are mounted eight regulating gates similar to those on the Gatun Spillway.

 Building the Dams
It is the mission of the Gatun Dam to impound enough of this water in the lake to carry the commerce of the world across the continental divide, and to provide lockage water for putting the ships through the locks at the two sides of the isthmus.
The problem was simply one of building a dam between the hills at the two sides of the valley, utilizing the small hill in the middle of the valley as a site for the spillway, through which the surplus waters in the lake should be passed over the dam and down into the sea.
The dam which was built is a mile and a half long, half a mile wide at the base, 300 feet wide at the water line, and 100 feet wide at its crest.
