Steely Dan : Gaucho - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Its follow-up, Gaucho, while sonically similar, is its polar opposite: a precise and studied record, where all of the seams show.
Gaucho essentially replicates the smooth jazz-pop of Aja, but with none of that record's dark, seductive romance or elegant aura.
Furthermore, Walter Becker and Donald Fagen's songs are generally labored, only occasionally reaching their past heights, like on the suave "Babylon Sisters," "Time Out of Mind," and "Hey Nineteen." Still, those three songs are barely enough to make the remainder of the album's glossy, meandering fusion worthwhile.

This album came to my attention because it was their new album, of course.
Gaucho is one album past Aja, and only suffers from a little bit of ego.
It is a magnificent album, and if it hadn’t followed the heels of perhaps the greatest album of all time, it would have been the champion of the world.

Gaucho by Steely Dan (lyrics & reviews)
No, it's not as consistent as what came before, save "Royal Scam", but "Gaucho" is the culmination of all of those albums and, like the Amazon reviewer stated, is the logical bridge between the original Dan and the reunion albums.
Not surprisingly, a lot of the album's content was substantially more sardonic than that of "Aja." The former album had been just slightly less pessimistic than their previous works; for instance there was the brightness of 'Peg,' and the care-free 'Josie' (the doomsday feeling was echoed best through 'Deacon Blues').
But with "Gaucho," Becker and Fagen had convinced themselves that they had already spent their musical zenith, which understandably made the creation of this album a daunting task.

Gaucho contains two FM staples, "Babylon Sisters" and "Hey Nineteen", both of which I still hear on classic rock stations.
Gaucho on SACD has an advanced stereo resolution track (which is excellent), an advanced resolution track (described above) and a regular CD track (which to be honest, is pretty much the same as the CD).
Gaucho contains the songs Babylon Sisters; Hey Nineteen; Glamour Profession; Gaucho; Time Out of Mind; My Rival and Third World Man. The SACD includes a lyric sheet and a story about how Gaucho came to be.

The Daily Vault Album Reviews : Gaucho
Steely Dan had released an album every year between 1972 and 1977, but took three years to release the follow-up to Aja, the band's masterpiece.
Third, Becker was in a car crash around this time, and finally, a technician fell asleep on the job and erased a legendary song called "The Second Arrangement," believed by some to be one of the group's best songs.
This is a tired album, the music of a seductive jazz nightclub that has long since been passed by.

Steely Dan: Gaucho - PopMatters Music Review
Although it did yield the top ten hit "Hey Nineteen", Gaucho was the follow up to their landmark album Aja, and it would have been almost an impossibility for the album not to be seen as a letdown by fans and critics.
The overlooked title track "Gaucho", is also one of Steely Dan's best songs, so show me an album from the last 20 years with four great songs that stand the test of time, and I'll show you a classic album.
In a nutshell, Gaucho was lost in the shadow of Aja and the changing tides of music, but this remastered version is worth another listen if you missed it the first time around.

CANOE -- JAM! - The Steely Dan Q&A
We had some new material from our solo albums that we were doing, but we just started collecting ideas for songs, naturally, from being thrown together on the road and in the studio, so we started writing songs in '97.
Mostly the album was written in '97, then we recorded it in '98 and '99.
Becker: You know, I think the trickiest thing about doing the album is writing together, and what was really helpful in terms of writing together was having done it a few times in the past and started up and had some backlog of things to work with.

Steely Dan: Gaucho - PopMatters Music Review
That Gaucho is the first of the classic albums to be heard in this pristine format is most odd, since it was the last album selected to be released in remastered format by MCA just three years ago.
As Becker and Fagen's bewildering liner notes indicate, Gaucho sounds like the product of a band based on the unique gifts of session musicians who are unfortunately focused not on creating great music in the studio but instead on snorting little white lines of powder off of mirrors.
In their place, on five of the album's tracks, the percussion is provided instead by an early and dismal form of a drum machine.

When they recorded their third album, they abandoned live performances and the concept of fixed ensemble personnel in favor of hiring the finest recording studio musicians.
“Gaucho” (from Gaucho, 1980) was inspired by the 1974 Keith Jarrett composition titled “As Long As You Know You’re Living Yours,” and Becker and Fagen publicly admitted their affection for Jarrett’s work.
Only minor derivations were present, however, and the body of “Gaucho” was a fresh and complex 5-minute form replete with asymmetrical formal sections, angular rhythms, and unorthodox lyrics.

It was as if the album was doomed from the start and I bow deep to Donald Fagen, Walter Becker, Gary Katz and Roger Nichols that they eventually got it finished.
Recorded in seven studios with an early primitive digital sequencer, "Gaucho" proves that the abject failure of recent records to sound great isn't due to digital artefacts, or modern recording techniques, but a lack of will and skill.
And Gaucho, with humorous and dark (and eerily predictive) lyrics about 'bodacious cowboys', is starting to sound like music that plays on tv commercials or something, but its weirdness redeems it somewhat.

 Progressive Ears Album Reviews
This is the first album Walter Becker and Donald Fagen made after letting their the band Steely Dan go.
I think Katy is in some ways a throwback to the previous albums, it reminds me a lot of Pretzel Logic and is almost as diverse musically and as quirky; yet the uptown jazz/pop style they became known for by the end of the 70s makes it's debut here as well.
This is not the most even album the band would make and it is clear they were in a state of transition.

"While recording "Gaucho", Becker and Fagen had to endure various misfortunes which delay the release date: Becker is hit by a car, one of their favorite new tracks "The Second Arrangement" is accidentally erased by an assistant recording engineer, and there is a dispute over which record company has the rights to their forthcoming album.
Unknown to most fans was the "lost" Gaucho, a complete album vastly different to what was released.
For the longest time, the only source of info on this lost album was from Brian Sweet’s Steely Dan biography, Reelin’ In The Years, which told the story of how at least one track from the early Gaucho sessions was accidentally erased by a careless engineer.

Their albums are also notable for the characteristically 'warm' and 'dry' production sound, and the sparing use of echo and reverberation, effects which were often heavily over-used on other rock recordings of this period.
Regarded as one of the best (and best-recorded) albums of the period, it won a slew of awards, had shot into the Top Five in the U.S. charts within three weeks of release, and was one of the first American LPs to be certified 'platinum' for sales of over 1 million albums.
Nevertheless, the Gaucho album was another major success, and they scored another hit with the single Hey Nineteen, but by this time the duo had decided to split up, and they announced the parting in June 1981.

I'll review all three of these albums together because I feel these three albums represent Steely Dan's finest works in a trio which demonstrates Becker, Fagen, and producer Katz's development..
"Gaucho" is a tune that has grown on me along with "Third World Man." "My Rival" is probably my least favorite mainly because I feel the lyrics are a little goofy, but maybe that's the intent.
Gaucho was Steely Dan's last album, though Donald Fagan's subsequent disks have similar themes, and even Becker as guests, and there is growing rumor and plans of a NEW Steely Dan album, but it seems to be taking a bit to get it together.

When it was announced that Steely Dan were releasing their ninth studio album, the news came as something of a surprise.
