The end of Gaudium et Spes?
Gaudium et Spes ("Joy and Hope"), the Constitution on the Church in the Modern World, was the decree at the heart of the Second Vatican Council's message, its tone differing from many earlier Church documents in that it did not warn or condemn but expressed sympathy and understanding for the world.
In important ways Gaudium et Spes was also "triumphalistic," asserting the Churchs superiority over the culture--the gist of its message being that, so long as human beings rely merely on their own resources to achieve good, they will always be disappointed.
Insofar as Gaudium et Spes was revolutionary, it was in its failure to acknowledge the full power of evil in the world, particularly the reality of evil motives in human affairs.

J.Ozolins: Recurring Themes: Social Justice and Gaudium et Spes
Gaudium et Spes, it has been argued, is a radical and daring document, both for its scope and for significantly departing from the usual custom of addressing only Catholics in Church documents by speaking also to “all persons of good will”.
Gaudium et Spes puts this in the following way:“Man's social nature makes it evident that the progress of the human person and the advance of society itself hinge on one another” [12], and further on, “….God did not create man for life in isolation, but for the formation of social unity” [13].
Gaudium et Spes argues that the living conditions of modern life and the advances in the natural, human and social sciences have profoundly changed the way in which we think about what it is to be human.

Gaudium et Spes and its Relevance to Catholic Higher Education
Gaudium et Spes describes conscience, saying: “In the depths of his conscience, man detects a law which he does not impose upon himself, but which he is bound to obey.
Gaudium et Spes also expressed its conviction that there should be an agency of the universal Church set up for the worldwide promotion of justice and for charity for the poor.
Gaudium et Spes was a clear indication of the Church’s willingness for dialogue within the Church, with those not in full communion with her, with those who believe in God and with those also who do not as yet acknowledge God, and even with those who oppress the Church.

Weigel: "Gaudium et Spes" opened new conversations between the Church and democracy, the Church and science, and the Church and nonbelievers.
It's also striking that "Gaudium et Spes" 22 and 24 are the two most cited conciliar references in the voluminous magisterium of the present Pope.
"Gaudium et Spes" 24 -- which teaches that the fulfillment of our lives is found in self-giving, not self-assertion -- is the Church's response to the selfishness and solipsism of so much of modern culture.

First of all, Gaudium et spes shed light on the perennial human quest for meaning: our origin, the purpose of life, the presence of sin and suffering, the inevitability of death, the mystery of life after death are all unavoidable questions (cf.

Church in the Modern World: a 30-year perspective
Gaudium et spes suggested a Church with a new strategy for the Church's presence in the world, one which emphasized neither withdrawal, triumphalism, nor assimilation, but critical conversation (listening and speaking) along with principled cooperation with other social institutions and communities of people.
What makes Gaudium et spes genuinely significant is the way it defined the Church: not as an institution established in the past and still conducting a self-maintenance operation, but in terms of its task in the world.
Gaudium et spes speaks to the social order and the major issues to be found there.

Gaudium et Spes instructs the faithful on the importance of Christian engagement with the modern world and the principles that should govern that engagement.
From day to day, in every group or nation, there is an increase in the number of men and women who are conscious that they themselves are the authors and the artisans of the culture of their community.
That those who are seeking holiness are now trying to reclaim such a powerful force in our culture is a reason for gaudium and spes (joy and hope), indeed.

"The most significant contribution of Gaudium et Spes was the impetus it gave to the liberationist themes that emerged in church documents during the late sixties and early seventies.
Although Gaudium et Spes itself cannot be classified as liberationist, it nevertheless contained the foundations for the liberationist themes that emerged in the encyclicals of Pope Paul VI, in the so-called 'Medellin' documents of the Latin American bishops, and in the document Justice in the World, issued by the 1971 Synod of Bishops."
Gaudium et Spes stands, then, as both a high moment in Catholic internationalism according to the moderate-realist tradition, and as the key transitional document in what would be, over the next generation, a process of abandoning that heritage."

Gaudium et Spes addressed these obstacles on three fronts: individual life, life in society, and the realm of human work and activity.
In the realm of society, Gaudium et Spes recognized that the church’s mission is not one of politics or economics (Gaudium et Spes, 42).
Finally, in the realm of human activity, Gaudium et Spes proclaimed that the church’s greatest resource is its members themselves—all of them.

The destiny of the human community has become all of a piece, where once the various groups of men had a kind of private history of their own.
Others think little of certain norms of social life, for example those designed for the protection of health, or laws establishing speed limits; they do not even avert to the fact that by such indifference they imperil their own life and that of others.
Let everyone consider it his sacred obligation to esteem and observe social necessities as belonging to the primary duties of modern man. For the more unified the world becomes, the more plainly do the offices of men extend beyond particular groups and spread by degrees to the whole world.
