The Gauja (Estonian and Livonian: Koiva; German: Livländische Aa, see Aa River) is one of the longest rivers in Latvia with a length of 452 km and a catchment area of 8900 km².
The Gauja flows into the Baltic Sea northeast of Riga.
This part of Gauja River contains numerous natural and culture values and has been declared as national park (Gauja National Park) in 1973.

Project territory includes the river Gauja with a length of 140 km, its valley (from the border of Gulbene and Alūksne districts to Valmiera town) and surrounding territories.
