Gaultheria - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gaultheria is a genus of about 170 species of shrubs in the family Ericaceae.
In the past, the Southern Hemisphere species were often treated in a separate genus Pernettya; however, there is no consistent reliable morphological or genetic difference to support recognition of two genera, and they are now united in the single genus Gaultheria.
The species vary from low, ground-hugging shrubs less than 10 cm tall, up to 2.5 m tall, or, in the case of G.

gaultheria introduction   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-19)
Gaultheria is characterized by a superior ovary, its fruit--a loculicidal capsule which is enveloped by a fleshy and accrescent calyx-- and stamens which have straight filaments and 4-awned anthers.
Gaultheria domingensis in Guadelupe and Martinique has been given "vulnerable" status according to IUCN standards because the localities at which it is found (summits of active volcanoes) are susceptible to destruction and because tourists collect the plants as ornamentals or for the edible fruits (Sastre, 1978).
Gaultheria has not been revised in its entirety since de Candolle (1839) when only 39 species were known, and it was not until 1991 that Middleton (1991b) provided the first infrageneric system of classification for the genus on a worldwide basis.

The genus Gaultheria is a member of the heather family; it has around 200 species of evergreen shrubs, around 20-30 of which are available to grow in gardens here.
Its rough, leathery, mid- to dark green leaves are broadly-oval, sharply pointed, and rounded at the base; they are 3-9 cm long, 1-6 cm wide and finely serrated, each serration ending in a bristle tooth.
The genus name Gaultheria is in honour of a French physician and botanist of Quebec, Jean François Gaultier (c.1708-1756); shallon derives from Kikwu-salu, the Chinook name for this plant.
