Gauss was a child prodigy, of whom there are many anecdotes pertaining to his astounding precocity while a mere toddler, and made his first ground-breaking mathematical discoveries while still a teenager.
Gauss was so pleased by this result that he requested that a regular heptadecagon be inscribed on his tombstone.
Gauss predicted correctly the position at which it could be found again, and it was rediscovered by Franz Xaver von Zach on December 31, 1801 in Gotha, and one day later by Heinrich Olbers in Bremen.

 Gauss biography
Gauss began corresponding with Bessel, whom he did not meet until 1825, and with Sophie Germain.
Gauss was married for a second time the next year, to Minna the best friend of Johanna, and although they had three children, this marriage seemed to be one of convenience for Gauss.
Gauss was excited by this prospect and by 1840 he had written three important papers on the subject: Intensitas vis magneticae terrestris ad mensuram absolutam revocata (1832), Allgemeine Theorie des Erdmagnetismus (1839) and Allgemeine Lehrsätze in Beziehung auf die im verkehrten Verhältnisse des Quadrats der Entfernung wirkenden Anziehungs- und Abstossungskräfte (1840).

Sometimes known as "the prince of mathematicians," Gauss had a remarkable influence in many fields of mathematics and science and is ranked beside Euler, Newton and Archimedes as one of history's greatest mathematicians.
Gauss' dissertation contained a critique of d'Alembert's proof, but his own attempt would not be accepted due to implicit use of the Jordan curve theorem.

This was puzzling, as I seemed to record the western ramparts of Gauss extending further south to a point opposite the centre of Hahn (large crater south of Berosus).
On the vast interiorare craters ridges and many hills.Of the craters the largest lies on the west and there are at leastfour more to the south of it.
Crater positions and feature interpretations are very often difficult to correlate between observations made on differing dates and moreso with different instruments, this is one of the pitfalls of visual observation, the ability to set down on paper accurate records of features over an extended period is the mark of a first class observer.

Due to its location, the crater is viewed from the side by observers on the Earth, and its visibility is subject to libration effects.
The closest named craters are Vashakidze to the southeast on the far side of the Moon, and the heavily-eroded Riemann crater to the south.
Further to the southwest is the prominent Gauss crater, and to the north-northwest is the Mare Humboldtianum.

Date Observed: 9/14/05 10:02 PM Comments: Small, circular crater just west of the Riphaeus Mountains on the eastern edge of Ocean Procellarum directly east of crater Hansteen with the intervening mare between the two devoid of features, approximately mid-way between craters Kepler and Gassendi.
While it is nice to speculate that 5 monks may have described its origin from a meteorite in 1178, the current evidence suggests what they saw was most likely due to their witnessing a meter (Beta Taurid meteor) burning up in a trajectory that was limited to their field of view.
Date Observed: 8/10/05 9:30 PM Comments: Large, well-defined crater- the 1st of a chain of three (Theophilus, Cyrillis, Catharina) lying at the western junction of Mare Nectaris and Sinus Asperitatis- with prominent terraced walls, smooth floor and prominent central peaks.

Gauss (crater) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gauss is a large lunar crater, named after Carl Friedrich Gauss, that is located near the northeastern limb of the Moon's near side.
The uneven crater rims in the south and a series of rises in the north gives the appearance of a ridge line that traverses the crater floor from north to south.
By convention these features are identified on lunar maps by placing the letter on the side of the crater mid-point that is closest to Gauss crater.

The Maria Imbrium is 1,200 km across, the Apennine mountain range is 6,000m high and the rim walls of the highest craters up to 3,000 m high.
Many of the Moon's craters have central peaks; they occur randomly all over the Moon, though there are many more on the far side (where there are no "seas").
The largest craters are 100 km across, so big that even rims rising 3,000 km high cannot be seen from the middle.

The Lunar Orbiter overhead view shows that Gauss is an interesting crater with a lava-like floor with two or three groups of rilles, including a wide straight one near the east wall.
One is on the eastern rille, another is in the breached crater at the southern part of the floor, and the possible last one is in Gauss B, the large crater on the eastern rim.

Humboldt is a spectacular crater but not often seen, because it lies in the zone of libration, which was favourable for Humboldt on this occasion, and furthermore is in the eastern edge, a side less frequently captured because you have to wait until after full moon.
The southernmost part of the crater wall has been submerged into the lava of the Mare, and although most of Gassendi's crater floor is lighter than Mare Humorum, the part adjacent to this break in the wall is the same colour, apparently formed of lava spilling in from the south.
On the north-east wall of the crater is Porter, a somewhat smaller crater with a central mountain.
