 Palaeos Vertebrates: 290.400 Crocodylomorpha: Crocodylia
Gavialidae: Eogavialis (Eocene-Oligocene of Africa), Eotomistoma (Late Cretaceous of Mongolia), Gavialis (from Pliocene of India, Asia and South America), Gryposuchus (Pliocene to Pleistocene of Brazil), Ramphosuchus (Pliocene of India), Thoracosaurus (Late Cretaceous to Eocene of Europe and North America).
Introduction: These crocodylians developed a very slender snout, with very small nasal bones, which reduce resistance in the water.
Sometimes the Gavialidae was considered a distinct family, as in the wonderful (and long out of print) natural history book The Living World of Animals, (1970, The Reader's Digest Association).

Crocodilians of Pakistan: Indian Gharial or Gavial
The gharial is the most long-snouted and together with the saltwater crocodile the largest of the living crocodilians (males up to 67m).
Placed in a family by itself, the Gavialidae, the gharial has long been separated from the rest of the crocodilian stock (Densmore 1983).
Adult males grow a bulbous nasal appendage, which resembles an Indian pot called a 'ghara,' from which the species derives its name.

Gavial   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
The Gharial (Gavialis gangeticus) is the only surviving member of the family Gavialidae, along-established group of crocodile -like reptiles with long, narrow jaws.
The Gharial (sometimes Indian Gharial, orGavial) is the second-largest of all surviving crocodilians : alarge individual can be 6-7 metres long.
If the three surviving groups of crocodilians are regarded as separate families, then the Gharial becomes the only member ofthe Gavialidae, which is related to the families Crocodylidae (crocodiles) and Alligatoridae (alligators and caymans).

Herpetofauna Mexico 5:53-54, discussed the nomenclature of the group name, including justification for using Crocodylia (Gmelin 1789) rather than Crocodilia (Owen 1842) as the ordinal name.
They also reviewed evidence for recognizing two families, Crocodylidae and Gavialidae with three subfamilies in the former, Alligatorinae, Crocodylinae, and Tomistominae, rather than the more traditional three families, Alligatoridae, Crocodylidae, and Gavialidae; see also Sill 1968, Copeia (1):76-88.
