Loon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A loon is the size of a large duck, to which it is unrelated; its plumage is largely grey or fl, and it has a spear-shaped bill.
The loons compose a genus (Gavia), family (Gaviidae), and order (Gaviiformes) all their own.
These were previously considered the most ancient of the northern hemisphere bird families, but it has recently become clear that the Anseriformes (ducks, geese and swans) and the Galliformes (the pheasants and their allies) are older groups.

Gaviiformes (Wetmore and W. Miller 1926) is an order within class Aves, consisting of a single family, Gaviidae (loons).
A scrap of tarsometatarsus from the Upper Cretaceous of Chile, Neogaeornis wetzeli, has been variously interpreted as a gaviiform (Lambrecht 1929, Olson 1992a), a hesperornithiform (Martin and Tate 1976, Martin 1983, Feduccia 1996, 1999), or simply a neornithine incertae sedis (Hope 2002).
It seems clear that despite Olson's optimism, it cannot adequately be referred to Gaviidae.

Diverse data sets also support close relationships between Procellariformes (albatrosses, petrels, shearwaters) and some Pelecaniformes (gannets, tropic birds, pelicans), and between Gaviiformes (loons) and Sphenisciformes (penguins).
Birds have highly developed color vision, use vocalizations to mediate social interactions, and are able to detect and react to magnetism (see Gill, 1990).
