Gavin Maxwell, the author who became a household name in the 20th century through his writing, is undoubtedly the best known of the Maxwells of Monreith and probably the best known of all the Maxwells.
Gavin's mother, Lady Mary, was a daughter of the Duke of Northumberland who was one of the richest and largest landowners in England and incidentally a close relation of James Smithson of Smithsonian fame.
Gavin had always been interested in the story of a distant aunt who had married a Sicilian nobleman in the early 1 91h century who had died soon after the wedding.

Interesting Places - Gavin Maxwell's Sandaig   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Gavin Maxwell wrote his autobiographical account of his life with otters here and with the fame that followed, forever changed Sandaig from a remote location with beautiful shell sand beaches to one of the most visited areas on the north west coast of Scotland.
Not much has changed in that time; the waterfall - the soul of Camusfearna to which Maxwell said he would return after his death - still roars during the winter months and the burn which gave the book its name still meanders in a semi circle to the sea.
As well as the graves of Maxwell and his famous otter Edal, (who perished in the fire which destroyed the house) there are still some tangible reminders of Maxwell's time here.

Maxwell is an extremely common name in the area.

Where a Maxwell Swam with Otters
It is part of a project undertaken by the Born Free Foundation in partnership with the Eilean Ban Trust, and the Maxwell name is at the project’s heart since the island was Gavin Maxwell’s final home and where he wrote best-selling book.
It was Maxwell’s account of his own life and relationship with the otters and formed the first part of the Ring of Bright Water Trilogy, with two later books, The Rocks Remain (1963) and Raven Seek Thy Brother (1968) continuing the story.
On the island, they can traverse a nature trail, view wildlife from a specially designed “hide,” and visit a museum in memory of Gavin Maxwell which occupies the 40 foot “Longroom” of the home where he lived and wrote until his death in 1969.

This is the true story of Gavin's befriending of otters (or perhaps we should say of the otters' decision to befriend Gavin.) In one scene, on the first night Gavin has one of the otters in his home, the otter carefully watches Gavin get into bed and pull the covers to his chin.
Gavin never for the rest of his life produced prose that so translucently coveys the beauty of the waters around his cottage, or the sense of his own evolving life and emotions.
Gavin Maxwell's Ring of Bright Water is a much-deserved classic.

SLAINTE   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Gavin Maxwell (1914-69) has a distinctive place in the succession of British writers who have communicated a passion for the environment in a way that surpasses mere description.
His grandfather, Sir Herbert Maxwell, was a fine topographical writer, but Gavin Maxwell's books enjoyed a much more universal success, perhaps because he combined his eye for nature with impossible dreams and a determination to live life in his own way which he communicated in elegant, readable prose, close, at times, to poetry.
Maxwell was a manic-depressive minor aristocrat, both talented and charming, but selfish.

Gavin Maxwell's "Ring of Bright Water" is one of the most famous books of natural history of the 20th century.
The story (based on Gavin Maxwell's book of the same name) is somewhat formulaic and dated by its romanticism, but enjoyable nonetheless.

Maxwell exceeds at conveying deep personal emotion, and this book is suffused with the joy he felt during his first few years with his otters Mij and Edal.
Maxwell's "Ring of Bright Water" is not a book about otters alone.
If one truly loves the wilds that Maxwell lovingly details, one would not subject a wild animal to such stresses, or introduce a non-native predator to such a rich and rare place.

Maxwell managed to infuse his account of his difficult, isolated, solitary existence in a cabin, bereft of electricity or plumbing, with a universal spiritual resonance matched by few nature writers in the twentieth century.
His other books, praised by critics and beloved by readers, chronicle Maxwell's impractical schemes and peripatetic travels, from shark hunting in the sea around the Hebrides to shooting ducks among the reed islands of Iraq and mingling with the nobility of the remote Atlas Mountains of Morocco.
The records of his travels and his involvement with the natural world are marked by a lyrical style rooted in the daily pains of making one's way in the world.

Fifty years ago Gavin Maxwell went to live in an abandoned house on a shingle beach on the west coast of Scotland.
Ring of Bright Water, the story of Gavin Maxwell's first ten years with the otters in this idyllic setting, touched the hearts of readers the world over, brilliantly evoking life with these playful animals in this natural paradise.
Here, Gavin Maxwell's poignant and often comic memoir of his life with the otters has been collected into one volume so that at last it can be read as a single unbroken narrative.

Ring of Bright Water, famously made into the film starring Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna (as a sympathetic veterinarian) was one of several books written by Gavin Maxwell about solitary life within view of, but never on, Skye.
Although from a comfortably well-off background and with a lucrative diplomatic career ahead of him Maxwell sought solace in a simpler lifestyle.
The original book and its sequel, The Rocks Remain, tell the story of his life with semi-tame otters at Camusfearna, a remote part of the mainland opposite Isle Ornsay.

Thesiger's skill with a medicine chest and rifle assured them a welcome in every hamlet, and Maxwell's training as a naturalist and writer has left an invaluable record of a unique community and a vanished way of life.
