A dance of the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries possibly derived from the Renaissance branle.
The gavotte became a stylized member of the Baroque dance suite, performed after the sarabande.
It was considered a pastoral dance, written in 2 or in cut time and sometimes with a drone suggesting bagpipes.

 The Case of the Gavotte
Laure notes that the Gavotte was danced at the end of the Bransles, but that the steps were so common and so well known that it would have been uesless to write of them in detail.
Rameau noted that the Gavotte of his day came from Lyonnois and Dauphiny, so it is likely that what we are dealing with in the Baroque Gavotte is a regional variant which has by luck managed to become the dominant form.
She notes that it may be difficult for the beginner to know whether the movements are being done on the correct beat, and an outside eye may be necessary to confirm when the movements are being done correctly.

The Session: Tunes - Gavotte (slide)
One of the things that make Gavottes dances interesting is actually this balance between binary and ternary, so if the key signature is 12/8, you shall make it a bit more binary, it does not have to sound like a slide or a jig.
The entire point of the gavotte is the stress on the 7th beat.
Also, "Dans tro" simply means a "dance from the region of..." e.g.: "dans tro gavotte" (a dance from the region where gavottes are common) or "dans tro plinn" (a dance from the plinn region), etc. Sorry to be so anal, but this stuff is important to me.

The gavotte is a 17th century French dance in moderate 4/4 time which usually has phrases that begin and end in the middle of the measure.
Bach used gavottes in his instrumental suites as optional dances, typically in pairs intended to be performed da capo.
An interesting aspect of Bach’s compositional technique was to write the second gavotte in a contrasting style to the first; in this instance the second gavotte is in the form of a musette, a piece which imitates the old French bagpipes of the same name.

GAVOTTE (a French word adopted from the Provencal gavoto), properly the dance of the Gavots or natives of Gap, a district in the Upper Alps, in the old province of Dauphine.
It is a dance of a brisk and lively character, somewhat resembling the minuet, but quicker and less stately (see Dance); hence also the use of this name for a corresponding form of musical composition.
