Dead Man's Pass - Gawler, South Australia, 1969-1970
Gawler was/is one of the older settlements in South Australia, just old enough to build a few legends, none of which us kids heard as fact, more as 'gossip' from unauthoritive persons.
More importently, we juveniles certainly didn't believe in such nonsense, we only believed in what we could see or touch, that's just the way we were bought up, and not until recent times, have I had the time, personally, to reflect on anything in the past, and put any credibility to it (or not!?).
A couple of hotels and pubs, a big old mansion in Gawler West, a few other old creepy places had to be haunted, but alas no evidence.

Gawler is only 44km from Adelaide, but it has a distinct character eminently worthy of its status as ‘the first country town established in South Australia’.
That character is exemplified in such singular buildings as the Phoenix Foundry and Arch built by industrialist James Marton, and the Old Eagle Foundry, whose signature iron lace still decorates the guesthouse into which it has been converted.
Gawler's Church Hill heritage area remains much as it was in colonial days, while the nearby Willamston post office has been restored to its halcyon Cobb & Co coaching period.
