In 1909 Shrewsbury Corporation bought Gay Meadow for £1,365 and despite objection from the Salop Infirmary just across the river - they though the noise of the crowds would bother the patients - leased the Gay Meadow to Shrewsbury Town FC.
At this time Town were renting the Gay Meadow for £125 per year, but in 1959 they bought the freehold of the ground for £6,750, on the agreement that a covenant would be placed on the ground instructing that it could only be used for 'sporting and cultural purposes'.
Since then there have been few major improvements to Gay Meadow, the scoreboard was removed to allow a new access point through the Abbey Gardens but this was scupered after the original costs escalated and the council would only allow a turnstile to built on a 'trial' basis.

As it's name suggests, it lies on Meadow Lane, a main road which connects the eastern suburbs of Nottingham to the southbound exits of the city and to the M1 motorway.

The stand behind the far goal is another terrace, as is the final stand, both of these are similar height and also appears to be near enough the same stand due to the fact that fans can walk around from one side to the other without being stopped or anything.
The acoustics at Gay Meadow are quite poor.
Overall, Shrewsbury's not too bad but there are plenty of things that would make you want to come here for a random game and it's only a good thing that they want to move to a new ground.
