The policy states that as long as gays in the military don’t profess their sexual orientation, their commanders won’t attempt to "find them out" and they will still be allowed to serve in the U.S. Armed Forces.

From what I understand, there are two types of opposition to gay rights: evangelical Christians, who obsess about gay proselytization and the “gay agenda”, and folks who simply think gay relationships are unnatural and perhaps gross, but don’t worry about them without prompting.
The more people talk about gay marriage, the more naturalized it becomes, and in four years it is guaranteed to be less controversial than it is today.
