		The Gay and Lesbian Kingdom of the Coral Sea Islands is a micronation established as a symbolic political protest by a group of gay rights activists based in southeast Queensland Australia.
		On June 14, 2004, the group 'claimed' the Coral Sea Island Territory and 'seceded' from Australia after sailing to the largest island in the group and raising the rainbow flag there.
		One of the group's members, Dale Parker Anderson (born 1965), was declared Emperor, as Dale I. The "secession" was staged in protest at a decision to ban gay marriage made by the Australian parliament.

		The territory was created in 1969 by the Coral Sea Islands Act (before, the area was considered part of Queensland) and extended in 1997 to include Middleton Reef and Elizabeth Reef nearly 800 km further South, already in the Tasman Sea.
		The islands, cays and reefs of the Great Barrier Reef are not part of the territory, belonging to Queensland instead.
		Saumarez Reefs, southernmost reefs to be located on the Coral Sea Shelf; three main reefs and numerous smaller reefs that form a large crescent-shaped formation open to the northwest, about 27 by 14 km, area less than 300 km².

		On the 14th of June 2004, 7 gay activists (5 guys and 2 girls) settled in Australia’s uninhabited overseas territory of the Coral Sea Islands and declared the territory an independent sovereign gay nation.
		So hence the Coral Sea Islands became a Kingdom and the resident with the “most” royal blood became the defacto prince/emperor which unfortunately much to his embarrassment happened to be Dale because his grandmother is a direct descendant of the British & French Royal Family.

		The Pink Paper's main feature this week is about a group of dissatisfied Australians who left the mainland in June to set up their own state, the Gay and Lesbian Kingdom of the Coral Sea Islands.
		The comparison of the situation of gays with that of Jews is quite fair, since both have been targets in all spheres, economic, social and political, and both were victims msot obviously of the Nazis.
		I'd prefer it if it were less obviously male-dominated, and more queer than gay, but I'm still quite impressed by it and hope the community there can continue for a while longer and gain more attention at any rate.
