Some people say that the gay lisp is a way for guys to show that they are feminine, (by picking up some speech habits of females) but I have never heard a gay lisp that sounds the same as a females speech.
Some other people say that the gay lisp is a way for gay people to be able to let others know that they are gay, both to attract other gay people, and also to deter heterosexuals from making any advancements.
If gay people want to be accepted the same way that everyone else is being accepted (and this goes with any other group that feels that they are experiencing prejudice) then they should not create unnecessary differences.

The discussion on the so-called "lisp" in Spanish is very good, and makes it clear that it has nothing to do with the speech impediment; so what is it doing in an article on the speech impediment?
The phenomenon is called stereotype, and the subject of lisping has very much to do with stereotypes, either real or perceived.
I'm interested in the claim that the gay lisp applies not just to "s" but to other coronal consonants as well, but I haven't been able to find any academic references on this topic.

I suspect that people are conflating effeminate speech with a "gay lisp." I've met a lot of gay guys, some of which spoke effeminately, some of whom didn't, but I have never, ever met one that actually "lithped." A lisp is a speech impediment.
If an effeminate gay man had a lisp, I could imagine that it would exacerbate the effect in the eyes (or ears, rather) of the straight audience.
The theory, at least as I see it, is NOT that all gay men speak with a gay lisp, but rather that all men who speak with a gay lisp are gay.

I've always wondered why gay guys lisp when they talk, and I'm guessing that is also somewhat of a marker, although I know lispers who are not gay, and I'm sure their are lots of gays (especially closeted gays) who don't lisp.
Not all gay men who are openly gay don't lisp - that is a horrible sterotype, as is saying that most lesbians wear their hair short.
Lisping like studdering is a documented speech impediment which therapy can help.

My lisp (which is minor) is biological; lost both front baby teeth at the same time as a kid, had to figure out another way to say sibilants, ended up with a small lisp.
More than a couple of my friends grew up with "gay lisps" but became flamingly heterosexual, and the couple of gay guys who I was friends with in high school definitely inflated their lisps during their period of growing sexual activity.
However, those gays are generally shown in a derogatory manner and are contrasted with the "virtuous" gays who are bold, courageous and active.

They don't exactly lisp - it's the pitch of the voice and a certain lack of clarity in their speech.
In general, I'd say that gay male speech imitates what they believe to be - or what is the stereotype of - female speech, regardless of the culture.
