The Attitudes Toward Lesbians and Gay Men (ATLG) Scale
The Attitudes Toward Lesbians and Gay Men (ATLG) Scale is a brief measure of heterosexuals' attitudes toward gay men and women.
Researchers wishing to compare a subject population's attitudes toward gay men with their attitudes toward lesbians are advised to use parallel forms of one of the subscales (the ATG items have usually been used for this purpose), with each item presented twice, once in reference to gay men and once in reference to lesbians.
Members of lesbian and gay organizations scored at the extreme positive end of the range (Herek, 1988), and nonstudent adults who publicly supported a local gay rights initiative scored significantly lower on the ATLG than did community residents who publicly opposed the initiative (Herek, 1994).

By grouping gay men's experience of the HIV epidemic with that of lesbians, the editors of this collection assume a shared "queer" identity for the two communities, whose experience with HIV has been markedly different.
HIV infection is rising among API men, but as the authors emphasize, "to be successful, future HIV prevention for gay APIs must address the important sociocultural issues of stigmatization, family and community, identity development, community empowerment, confidentiality and ethnic diversity" (132).
The book's focus on gay men is understandable in light of the far greater numbers of gay men who have contracted HIV in comparison to the numbers of lesbians.

Doctors Qazi Rahman and Glenn Wilson from the Institute of Psychiatry in London found that gay men performed well at mental tasks where women generally outperform men, but were not as good at tasks generally thought of as being "male".
In language tests, which are traditionally seen as a "female strong point", gay men did as well as heterosexual women.
Doctor Rahman said: "The fact that gay men and lesbians show cross-sex shifts in their brain functioning might also be related, partly, to the cross-sex shifts in their presentation of certain mental health problems in gay men, such as higher levels of anxiety disorders, depression and eating disorders usually found in women.

Gay men and lesbians have had a love of the open seas for centuries.
In spite of all the fabulous cruising adventures available today, some gays and lesbians scoff at taking a "mainstream" cruise and opt for all-gay charters by companies such as RSVP Vacations, (which shares the same parent company as this Web site), Atlantis or Olivia.
They're looking for the totally open environment, intense bonding, easy access to new gay friends from around the world and, sometimes, the hard-partying atmosphere that only an all-gay cruise can provide.

Rosik points out that as the "born that way" argument recedes in importance, many lesbians (as well as a minority of gay men) now attribute their sexual identity to personal choice.
In fact, a good body of research provides a convincing rationale for differentiating between lesbians and gay men in terms of erotic plasticity (Baumeister, 2000).
For example, Whisman (1996) found a higher percentage of lesbians (31%) than gay men (18%) who described their sexual orientation as being a conscious, deliberate choice.

The grouping together of "gay and lesbian" is now an accepted part of American speech, but while there are many experiences gay men and lesbians share, there are also obviously innumerable personal, political, and emotional differences between the two groups--differences that produce confusions and tensions.
In Opposite Sex: Gay Men on Lesbians, Lesbians on Gay Men, Sarah Miles and Eric Rofes have collected 14 essays by gay and lesbian scholars, activists, artists, and writers that begin to break the silence over what one homo-gender thinks of the other.
Miles and Rofes state that their purpose is to "bring the sex back into queer studies," and while many of these essays contain theory and vigorous intellectual discourse, they are all dedicated to talking about actual feelings and actual bodies in the real world.
