		In addition to the solo flute, the score calls for 2 flutes, 2 oboes, English horn, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, timpani, snare drum, bass drum, cymbals, harp, and strings.
		Rampal left the orchestral material virtually untouched, but in addition to transcribing the solo part for the flute he composed a new and of course idiomatic cadenza for the first movement.
		Here the music, particularly that for the solo instrument, is conspicuously more inward and meditative than anything in the outer movements, though not with a sense of urgency.

		Khachaturian and Glazunov are a strange pair, even though both were Russian and both composed effective and attractive music for the ballet.
		The vulgarity that other conductors afflict them with is absent here; clearly Khachaturian believed in his own music, even when others did not.
		Khachaturian selects four numbers from Spartacus and five from Gayaneh, including the infamous "Sabre Dance," and also "Gayaneh's Adagio," which Stanley Kubrick used to good effect in 2001: A Space Odyssey.

		His purely orchestral works, such as his concertos for piano, violin and ‘cello, are effortlessly melodic and fluent, and when he chose dramatic subjects, he was pragmatic.
		His two major ballets, "Gayaneh" (1942) and "Spartacus" (1954) had impeccable political credentials – the former was set on a collective farm, the latter took as its subject the revolt of Roman slaves in 73BC.
		This story is best known in the West from Stanley Kubrick’s film; but in the USSR it would have been well known that Karl Marx considered Spartacus, the rebel leader, to be the first great proletarian hero.

		The flower beds and the roses in the parks, which surrounds the churches, reminded me of iranian gardens and the strange red flowers with their almost velvet-like blossoms gave me a real deja vu.
		The two armenian saints Gayaneh and Chripsimeh, martyrs in th early fourth century, found death here in this region and wonderful churches were built in their memory.
		It was in the church of Gayaneh, that I first heard Anna Mailian singing and I felt close to heaven.
