Richmond is set to become the largest city in America with a Green Party mayor, after the election Tuesday of Gayle McLaughlin, and party leaders say her victory thrusts a group once defined as middle-class environmentalists into a new role as a multicultural force in local politics.
McLaughlin who was elected to the council four years ago, said being an environmentalist allowed her to understand the troubles in Richmond's neighborhoods, including high rates of childhood asthma in areas near refineries and heavy industry.
McLaughlin, a former school teacher, said her campaign was all about promoting the "people's interests over corporate interests." To combat the city's high crime, she said she will launch a job corps for local youth so young people can help with street repair and park maintenance.

Gayle is focused, and she has really good instincts about complex issues, even when the City Council is not provided with all the facts or she does not have the full historical context.
McLaughlin supports a better quality of life for Richmond residents, environmental justice, social equity, smart growth and empowered neighborhoods.
A victory by McLaughlin in the mayor’s race would send a very loud signal that Richmond voters are truly ready for change, not just a different name on the door of an office that has often served developers and out of town power brokers better than the residents.

Richmond City Councilwoman Gayle McLaughlin had a slight lead in her bid to unseat incumbent Mayor Irma Anderson on Tuesday night, while two incumbents and one outsider were leading a crowded field in the race for three seats on the City Council.
With 47 percent of precincts counted, McLaughlin, 54, was narrowly leading her opposition, getting 36 percent of the vote compared with 35.7 percent for Anderson and 27.7 percent for businessman Gary Bell.
During the campaign, McLaughlin said she would tackle the root causes of street violence by expanding library services and local community centers, creating a Youth Corps to employ more than 1,000 youth year-round, and making large corporations such as Chevron contribute more to the city's tax base.

The results of Richmond's mayoral election should be revealed Thursday afternoon, when the Contra Costa County Department of Elections finishes counting absentee and provisional ballots, according to Kathy Gover, the county's election processing supervisor.
"Gayle McLaughlin is taking a few days off after her successful victory," said McLaughlin campaign manager Juan Reardon.
Reardon said McLaughlin has received words of congratulations from a former mayor of Richmond but current Mayor Anderson is "holding on for the count," and has not conceded.
