In 145 BC Gaza was conquered by Jonathan the Hasmonean (Brother of Judah the Maccabee).
With the onset of the Palestinian uprising known as the intifada in 1987, Gaza became a center of political unrest and confrontation between Israelis and Palestinians, and economic conditions in the city worsened.

A total of 2,004 cases, including 29 deaths, were reported in Gaza province further north in Mozambique and 2,812 cases, including 14 deaths, in Sofala province in the centre of the country.
Gaza, Sofala and Maputo were among the areas most severely affected by drought and food shortages earlier this year, which have left many communities without clean water and adequate nutrition required to fight infections and illnesses.

GAZA, July 11, 2005 (IPC + WAFA) - - The head of the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS), Loay Shabana, estimated that the population in the occupied Palestinian territories has reached 3.762 million Palestinians, including 1.39 million in Gaza Strip.
Shabana, who was viewing a statistical report about the demographic situation in the Palestinian territories, which was prepared as part of the activities marking the World Population Day, said that the largest provinces in terms of population were Hebron in the West Bank and Gaza in the Gaza Strip.
The age structure of the Palestinian population clearly indicated it was a young society, as 46 percent of the population are aged between 0-14 years.

They live in Gaza, one of six central and southern provinces in Mozambique that have been badly hit by drought after suffering two consecutive years of flooding.
The impact of HIV/AIDS is regarded as one of the main factors, reducing the productive capacity of households at a time when additional human resources are needed to cope with the burden of looking for food, walking greater distances to collect water and taking care of sick family members.
Gaza province has the third highest infection rate with 17 per cent, and the Gaza Red Cross branch, with the support of the German Red Cross, has now developed a home-based care programme for five districts - Chokwe, Bilene, Guija, Chibutu and Manjakaze.

The peak of the outbreak in Maputo province and Maputo city occurred at the same time as a cholera outbreak began in Mpumalanga province, South Africa.
From 1 January to 15 June 2003 a total of 2004 cases including 29 deaths have been reported in Gaza province and 2812 cases including 14 deaths in Sofala province.
WHO is assisting the national health authorities in Sofala and Gaza provinces to control the cholera outbreaks.

 CARE Expands Relief Efforts for Flood Survivors in Mozambique
Expanding on its current relief activities in Inhambane Province, CARE now is distributing newly arrived supplies -- such as large-capacity water purifiers, blankets and small, collapsible containers for transporting water -- to people throughout the flood-ravaged province of Gaza in southern Mozambique.
Meanwhile, with the recent reprieve from rain, the focus in the south-central province of Inhambane has shifted from search and rescue missions to the delivery of urgently needed food and plastic sheeting.
CARE is focusing its relief efforts in Govuro district and Nova Mambone in the south-central province of Inhambane along the Save River while expanding its relief and recovery efforts to include severely affected people in the province of Gaza.
