HotHardware - The nVidia GeForce 2 MX-400   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Todate, with the success of the famed GeForce 2 GPU and the impending GeForce 3, it's fairly safe to say that nVidia has taken the lead of the video card market.
Using the new GeForce 2 MX chipsets, video card manufacturers should be able to provide an economical video card that is capable of running today's games as well as tomorrow's.
Unfortunately, I believe offering an additional 2 versions of the MX is going to seriously confuse the average user, so I've outlined the basic differences between the three cards.

Review - Leadtek WinFast GeForce 2 MX // PC /// Eurogamer
You can now also pick up GeForce 2 MX cards from other manufacturers such as Hercules (Guillemot) from all the usual retailers, and as with the GeForce 2 GTS cards, they all perform to within a few marks of one another, and as such price is bound to be the main deciding factor.
The GeForce MX chipset also has support for TwinView, which is similar to the Dual-Head technology used in the G400 series from Matrox, allowing you to use two monitors with a single graphics card.
But with the GeForce DDR still about £50 more expensive, and the latest GeForce 2 GTS and Voodoo 5 cards on another planet completely, the Leadtek card may just fill the gap if you are looking for a cheap but fairly capable graphics card.

 ASUS V7100 Geforce 2 MX Page 1
The Geforce 2 GTS, with its 01.8 micron core, has been out for 3 months and since Nvidia is on a 6 month product cycle, they have to come out with something to tide them over till the "next big thing" = NV20.
The Geforce 2 MX is assigned to be the Geforce 2 GTS's little brother and it's about to get funky in the OEM business, competing against ATi.
Furthermore, the Geforce 2 MX, due to its faster clock and memory speed, has a theoretical peak fillrate of 700 Mtexels/s, compared with the Geforce 256's 480 Mtexels/s.

Review - Hercules Prophet 2 MX // PC /// Eurogamer
But as the chip is essentially based around the GeForce 2 it supports all the features of the faster chip, such as AGP 4x support and fast writes, as well as bringing the power of the 2nd generation hardware TandL engines of the GTS to the mass market.
The GeForce 2 GTS is obviously way out in front, but while the Prophet is edged out by the DDR GeForce the margin is somewhat smaller, which does show that despite these memory limitations the tweaked core of the MX is more powerful than that of the original GeForce 256 chip.
The Prophet 2 MX is a great little card (literally) and if you are in the market for something quick but don't have a depthless wallet, then I would strongly urge you to consider the Prophet 2 MX - you could do far worse.

IGN: Hercules 3D Prophet II MX 400
The advent of the GeForce 2 MX on retail shelves has been called by many the beginning of "high-performance budget video cards." No longer would you have to pay an exorbitant sum of $300 or more for a high-performance video card, you could get one for a mere $150 that performed wonderfully.
The differences were very plain: the MX card was equipped with 32 megs of SDR memory instead of DDR memory, the core ran a lower clock speed, and instead of having four pixel pipelines, the MX has two.
Not a huge step up from the GeForce 2 MX, true to its name, the MX400 is just a slightly faster version of the chip released almost a year ago.

Review of the Chaintech Desperado RIA2 GeForce 2 MX 32Mb SDR graphic card
The GeForce MX chipset used by the RIA2, is itself based on the Nvidia GeForce 2 GTS chipset, and is manufactured using the same 0.18 micron process.
The MX is also limited by its use of SDR memory, whereas GTS cards come equipped with DDR memory that puts the MX's memory bus to shame.
On the other hand, the GeForce 2 MX does benefit from a few other bits of technology, Namely Digital Vibrance Control - which provides an extra degree of clarity, and luminosity to images - and Twinview, which allows two separate monitors to be connected to the same card.

For the GeForce 2 MX, the constraints of the 166 MHz SDR memory bus are increasingly apparent as the resolution increases.
Only the GeForce 2 GTS and its massive raw fill rate prowess is still considered playable by most players at this high of a resolution, and only in 16-bit color.
The GeForce 2 MX continues to battle neck and neck with the GeForce SDR, but loses out to its DDR counterparts, especially in 32-bit mode.

The Geforce MX Chipset found on the Hercules Prophet MX Dual Display, is targeted at a few different market sectors, the home user and the business user, it is a dual purpose dual display card.
Default clock speed on the Hercules MX is 175Mhz core, 183Mhz Memory speed, the memory is 5.5ns Hyundai SDRAM on this board, faster ram than on the Elsa MX that I tested previously.
The Hercules MX still uses a cool looking blue heatsink, but this time due to the lower core speed and the fact that the memory access on the MX is only 128bit it probably doesn't get warm enough at default settings to require a fan.
