GeForce FX - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The initial version of the GeForce FX (the 5800) was so large that it required two slots to accommodate it, requiring a massive heat sink and blower arrangement called "Flow FX" that produced a great deal of noise.
However, the GeForce FX still remained competitive in OpenGL applications, which can be attributed to the fact that most OpenGL applications use manufacturer-specific extensions to support advanced features on various hardware and to obtain the best possible performance, since the manufacturer-specific extension would be perfectly optimized to the target hardware.
FX 5200 was easily matched in value by ATI's older R200-based Radeon 9000-9250 series and outperformed by the even older Radeon 8500.

GeForce - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The GPU was sometimes outperformed by GeForce 2 Ultra since the Ultra had a faster core clock; however, the GeForce 3 was able to outperform the Ultra at higher resolutions and when anti-aliasing was applied due to an improved and more efficient memory controller.
The FX series also suffered from a high level of incompatibility because of issues with the shader, although this was largely due to buggy drivers which were later fixed.
The GeForce FX series became a subject of controversy when it was discovered that nVidia had "optimized" specific drivers to work with 3D Mark 2003, a popular benchmarking program used by media reviewers to compare graphic cards.

nV News - NVIDIA GeForce FX Preview - Page 1 of 1
The GeForce FX Intellisample technology consists of a series of hardware based efficiencies that are aimed at increasing graphics performance as well as image quality.
The GeForce FX 5600 Ultra (NV31) and the GeForce FX 5200 Ultra and GeForce FX 5200 (NV34) represent NVIDIA's upcoming performance and mainstream lineup, which are expected to be available in April.
According to NVIDIA, the GeForce FX 5600 Ultra is targeted to replace the popular GeForce4 Ti 4200, yet contains a processor and memory clock speed that exceeds that of the GeForce4 Ti 4600 (300MHz/650MHz).

GeForce FX 5950, based on the NV38 chip, is a new high end version of GeForce FX 5900, and it looks largely unchanged apart from clock speeds.
GeForce FX 5700, or NV36, on the other hand has more to it than just a few clock speed increases and looks to be the far more interesting part, not least because it will be potentially available to a far wider number of people.

IGN: GeForce FX 5600 Ultra Review
The GeForce FX 5600 Ultra has all of the graphical functionality of NVIDIA's flagship FX 5800 card with a few notable reductions in capability.
The last difference between the FX 5600 and FX 5800 and the one that I think is the most notable is that this reduction in capabilities has decreased the transistor count of the chip from 128 million to a mere 80 million, although the chip is still manufactured on the.13 micron process.
Sure the performance of the FX 5600 Ultra might not look all that good to someone who isn't running all of their games with super high-end quality settings cranked up, but that's not to say it isn't good.

The GeForce FX 5700 Ultra chip works at a higher clock than the GeForce FX 5900, GeForce FX 5900 Ultra and GeForce FX 5900 XT chips, and this may make you think that a GeForce FX 5700 Ultra is the faster than chips in the 5900 series.
Chips from the GeForce FX 5900 series access the memory at 256 bits per time, while the memory is accessed at 128 bits in the FX 5700 series.
For instance, the GeForce FX 5700 Ultra would have to access its memory at 1,700 MHz — the double of the memory clock used — to reach the memory performance of the GeForce FX 5900 Ultra.

If there is no native support for the full method in GeForce FX can a multi-pass method be implemented whereby the Pixel Shader does the Displacement Map filtering and the results are then passed back to the Vertex Shader to do the necessary tessellation (similar to the method 3Dlabs' P10/Wildcat VP can do)?
The GeForce FX method for displacement mapping does use a two-pass technique using a pixel shader program to filter the displacement map and passing results to a vertex shader program that offsets the geometry accordingly.
