GEBER - LoveToKnow Article on GEBER   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
In Albertus Magnus the name Geber occurs only once and then with the epithet of Seville ; doubtless the reference is to the Arabian Jabir ben Aflah, who lived in that city in the 11th century, and wrote an astronomy in 9 books which is of importance in the history of trigonometry.
The great puzzle connected with the name Geber lies in the character of the writings attributed to him, their style and matter differentiating them strongly from those of even tl~e best authors of the later alchemical period, and making it difficult to account for their existence at all.
Their language is vague and allegorical, full of allusions and pious Mussulman invocations; the author continually announces that he is about to speak without mystery or reserve, but all the same never gives any precise details of the secret~ he professes to reveal.

 Jabir or Geber (HealthMedicine-SicknessDisease)
Jabir, or Geber, as his name became in Latin translation, is "the Arabian father of European alchemy," and a pioneer acknowledged even in modern physical chemistry.
Geber, still following the idea that there were certain injuries caused by nature, even speaks of 'restoring' to the body the soul which 'has gone out of it'; this is another aspect of a chemical operation; thus, mercury is the soul which suits gold and the other metals.
The spirit also is capable of a sort of education; not only must it be fit to unite forcibly with its body, and for that reason be pure, but it must also be firm, it must resist fire, and to this end must, as far as possible, partake of the nature of fire.

 Geber
The name Geber, a Latinized form of Jabir, was adopted because of the great reputation of the 8th-century Arab alchemist Jabir ibn Hayyan.
Four works by Geber are known: Summa perfectionis magisterii (The Sum of Perfection or the Perfect Magistery, 1678), Liber fornacum (Book of Furnaces, 1678), De investigatione perfectionis (The Investigation of Perfection, 1678), and De inventione veritatis (The Invention of Verity, 1678).
Geber's works on chemistry were not equaled in their field until the 16th century with the appearance of the writings of the Italian chemist Vannoccio Biringuccio, the German mineralogist Georgius Agricola, and the German alchemist Lazarus Ercker.

If "geber" is merely a pronoun which refers to "mighty men" as most dictionaries tell us, rather than a proper noun referring to a people called "Geber", then why did all the translators, including the KJV translators, universally conclude that it means only "chief janitors" in 1 Chronicles 9:26?:
If Geber means merely "mighty men", then we are to believe that every one of the Ish living in Gibeon were "mighty men", which is akin to saying that all of the men are the tallest men, or all of the women are the prettiest women.

Pseudo-Geber - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pseudo-Geber ("false Geber") is the name assigned by modern scholars to an anonymous alchemist born in the 14th century, probably in Spain.
He wrote a few books on alchemy and metallurgy, in Latin, under the pen name of Geber (Jabir Ibn Haiyan), the 8th century Islamic alchemist with the same name.
Books by the real Jabir Ibn Hayyan had been translated into Latin during the 11th to 13th centuries, and had made a profound impression on European alchemists.

 5. “Our Volumes” of Geber
Geber says that the Summa is the sum of what he had written in his other “volumes.” Obviously those other “volumes” or “books” cannot be the three small tracts that are associated traditionally with the Summa.
Therefore the Summa as a sum of Geber’s other “volumes” should be referring to a larger number of earlier books that have been written by him.
Although we dispute the assumptions of the advocates of a Latin Pseudo- Geber since they are based on speculation or feeble evidence, yet we must mention that Berthelot reached a conclusion that the three short tracts were written after the Summa because they contain more advanced information.

 7. The Sulphur Mercury Theory and
One of the main arguments of Berthelot against Jabir’s authorship of Geber’s Latin works was that the sulphur mercury theory of metals which occurs in the Latin works has no trace in Jabir’s Arabic works.
He had access only to a limited number of Jabir’s Arabic works, and he based all his conclusions on that limited number which does not exemplify the true picture of the chemistry and alchemy of Jabir.
Jabir believed that, under the influence of the planets, metals were formed in the earth by the union of sulphur (which would provide the hot and dry `natures') and mercury (providing the cold and moist).
