Though Watanabe is an unknown in the USA, he has been playing samurais (so many that he "can't count") in Japanese movies and television productions since the mid-'80s.
Earlier this November morning, Watanabe coincidentally tuned in a Japanese cable channel on his hotel TV and caught one of his samurai performances from a miniseries shot 15 years ago.
Watanabe was born in the snowy countryside of Niigata, Japan, to parents who worked as teachers.
