Geddington is a small village north-east of Kettering, where the Stamford to Northampton road (now the A43) crosses the River Ise, a tributary of the Nene.
Geddington's history records the visit of various Plantagenate kings, supposedly attracted by the good hunting in Rockingham forest, but perhaps because it was on the main road north in wet weather.
Sydney R. Jones was born in Birmingham in 1881, studied at the Birmingham School of Fine Arts and, until the outbreak of the Great War, worked for an architects' firm in Birmingham.

Geddington Cross is one of the three surviving and is thought to be the best, both in architectural purity and preservation.
Nothing of this now remains except for some fragments of stone in the church, but it is possible that the steeply buttressed cottages in Wood Street originate from the same period.
The name Wood Street emphasizes the reason for a palace in Geddington, for this was the heart of Rockingham Forest, and very popular with kings and courts of the Middle Ages.

The wood is specifically mentioned in the Northamptonshire Victoria County History (Published in 1902) and described along with Geddington Chase as the great oak woods in the neighbourhood of Kettering.
The wood is much nearer to Kettering than Geddington Chase, which usually seems to be identified in earlier reports, and I do hold other literature where “near Kettering,” has a manuscript note, “Weekley Hall Wood,” or the record can be traced back to this source.
This was also the year of the last record from Geddington Chase that had a similar record history for the moth.

The village dates back to Saxon times, and probably before that as a Roman road crossed the river Ise about where the ford and 12th century bridge now are.
A royal hunting lodge stood just north of the church from the 11th - 13th centuries, as the village was surrounded by the forest of Rockingham, full of wildlife as it still is. This link put Geddington on the route of the funeral cortege of Queen Eleanor in 1290.
In the 19th century the re-discovery of ironstone in the north of the county led to the development of many quarries, including in Geddington, complete with narrow-gauge railways to bring the ore to the main lines.
