Gedit is great, but it’s not a “simple text editor” like Notepad.exe is. I also use Leafpad and I much prefer it to Gedit for day-to-day tasks because it loads much faster and its UI is just simple.
Gedit at least has an option to use the default application font (although I think it would make more sense to use the Terminal font, which really should be the Monospace font…).
If GEdit is aiming at developpers it should be out of the distribution, since developpers are (supposed to be) a small part of the Gnome userbase and they are perfectly capable of discovering and installing a more advanced text-editor.

Ankh, we are aware that gedit startup time is not as good as we would like and during 2.9 we worked quite a bit on trying to understand what was wrong and how we could improve it.

gedit version 2.10.2 and possibly earlier versions are vulnerable to a format string attack caused by improper handling of binary file names.
CVE-2005-1686: Format string vulnerability in gedit 2.10.2 may allow attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a bin file with format string specifiers in the filename.
NOTE: while this issue is triggered on the command line by the gedit user, it has been reported that web browsers and email clients could be configured to provide a file name as an argument to gedit, so there is a valid attack that crosses security boundaries.
