	SMART: sustainable management of scarce resources in the coastal zone
		The first one is the case of the Gediz River Basin, neighbouring the city of Izmir, where water scarcity is a significant problem.
		Water shortage is due basically to competition for water among various uses (water allocation problems) mainly irrigation with a total command area of 110,000 ha versus the domestic and fast growing industrial demand in the coastal zone, and environmental pollution although the basin experiences droughts from time to time.
		Originally, the area received excess water from the Gediz River for much of the year, but since 1990, with restrictions on irrigation releases, the reserve suffers from water shortages.

		Field studies conducted in Izmir's Gediz Delta and Central Anatolia's Tuz (Salt) Lake found that more than 32,000 flamingos wintered in Turkey in 2003; however, subsequent studies in 2004 show that 6,000 fewer flamingos migrated to Turkey this past winter.
		Flamingos in Turkey mostly reproduce in Tuz Lake and the Gediz Delta.
		Although mating is not witnessed every year in the Gediz Delta, the number of flamingos reproducing in the area has been increasing thanks to measures taken by Aegean University, the National Parks Association and the Aegean Nature Association.

		The conservation of the Gediz Delta as a natural area has significant implications in terms of increasing the local economy in addition to protecting birds and other wildlife.

		Besides the hydrodynamics of Gediz River, the aim of this study is to find the nutrient pollution carried to Izmir Bay through Gediz River for one-year period and to determine the relationship between nutrient and chlorophyll a concentrations.
		At the end of the study, nutrient pollution of Gediz River deltaic zone were defined and found that nutrient concentrations were in high levels suggesting that there was a discharge of industrial and domestic effluents.

		(2000) use the nearly horizontal Lower-Middle Miocene inay Group in the Selendi and Usak Gire basins immediately to the north of Gediz graben to support their contention that extensional tectonics in the region was not interrupted by short-lived contractional tectonics.
		(2000) has shown that the evidence is not strong enough to interpret definitely east-west-trending broad folds in the Miocene sediments in the Gediz graben as the product of extensional tectonics although an extensional origin does remain a possibility.
		Seyitoklu and his colleagues should respond to the points raised to enable more definite conclusions to be drawn as (1) to the existence of extensional folds in Gediz graben and (2) to the age, origin and evolution of the extensional tectonics in western Turkey.

		The Gediz (Alasehir) graben is one of the E-W trending grabens of the western Turkey extended terrane.
		Although the Sarigol area has not been affected by any strong earthquake since 1969 Alasehir earthquake (M=6.9), the presence of these deformational features suggest that the area has experienced microseismic activity.
		Therefore, we suggest that the eastern and southeastern parts of the Gediz (Alasehir) Graben have seismic risk potential.
