Gedun Drub (Wylie transliteration: Dge-'dun-grub), also spelled Gendun Drub and Gedun Drup (1391 – 1474) is retrospectively considered to be the first in the line of reincarnated Dalai Lamas of Tibet.
Gedun Drub was a student of Tsongkhapa (Btsong-ka-pa).
Gedun Drub was born in a cowshed as the son of nomadic tribespeople, and raised as a shepherd until the age of seven.

Gendun Drub later became the abbot of Gaden, and founded the Tashi Lhumpo monastery near Shigatse, west of Lhasa, which grew to become the largest monastery in the world.
Among his many writings are Sunlight on the Path to Freedom, a commentary on the ancient Buddhist texts known as Abhidharma-kosha, Crushing the Forces of Evil, an epic poem on the life of Buddha, and Song of the Eastern Snow Mountain, a poem dedicated to his mentor Je Tsongkhapa.

In his next life as Gedun Gyatso, he told his parents that he was Pema Dorje (his former birth name) and demanded to be brought back to his monastery.
In his third life as Sonam Gyatso (1543-1588) he met the Mongol chieftain Altan Khan, who complimented him by calling him "Dalai Lama" (Dalai is Mongolian for Ocean, so it can be translated as oceanlike teacher, or Ocean of Wisdom) and he has kept this name from then on.

The Tashilhumpo Monastery was built in the 15th century on the order of Gedun Drub who succeeded the founder of the Gelupa (Yellow Hat) sect and to whom the title of first Dalai Lama was awarded long after he died.
