Geek canon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Geek canon is a canon of books, art, films, television series, games, electronic gadgets, or other miscellanea, which have been influential in the shaping of geek culture.
The purpose of classifying articles as geek canon is similar to the purpose of Western canon; that is, the purpose is to inform new members about the critical works which are considered required reading of some sort.
John Romero's Daikatana is a peculiar consideration for geek canon.

Geek - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A geek (pronounciation /gi:k/) is a person who is fascinated, perhaps obsessively, by obscure or very specific areas of knowledge and imagination.
Geek may not always have the same meaning as the term nerd (see nerd for a discussion of the disputed relation between the terms).
Most geeks are adept with computers and treat hacker as a term of respect, but not all are hackers themselves - and some who are in fact hackers normally call themselves geeks anyway, because they (quite properly) regard `hacker' as a label that should be bestowed by others rather than self-assumed.

A geek is a person who is fascinated, perhaps obsessively, by obscure or very specific areas of knowledge and imagination.
Geeking is also a slang term for methamphetamine-induced behaviour of being fascinated with one thing for hours on end, such as repeatedly disassembling and reassembling radios or watches, or lining stones up in order of size.
But many of these same "geek" attributes can likewise be attributed to simple environmental influences — a love of books leading to a lack of social life, or an early teacher, friend, or family member who provided mentoring in an area coinciding with, and reinforcing, a pre-existing natural aptitude, leading to life-long vocation.

The Western canon, the body of literature and art which is considered to define Western civilization by widespread consensus.
Those who defended a canon pointed out that the elite canon was generally available to all and was therefore not elitist, and that the word "academic" was merely negative code for "educated." The particularly American controversy was a skirmish in the wider "culture wars."

Geek has always had negative connotations in general colloquial usage, where being described as a geek tends to be an insult.
A geek can be so absorbed in her imagination that she exhibits the geeky 'lost-in-space' gaze, and may appear to be unresponsive due to her absorption in other thoughts or pursuits.
Geeks are often considered technological monks - too busy working within their intellectual domain to do menial chores or worry about current trends.

Canon showed off a new ultra-thin, plastic, flexible display unit today.
The first non-prototype displays will probably sport low resolutions and monochrome only, but Canon is apparently shooting for color versions with 200 dpi resolution, though those might not hit the market until 2007.
I know these Canon displays won't be that flexible for quite a while, but we'll get there relatively quickly once these things start hitting the market.

Canon decided it was time to fly in peeps from the world over for a massive expo in New York this week called the Canon Expo 2005.
Besides having a Canon employee to visitor ratio of about 4:1 (which isn't a knock on their turnout, they were just really well staffed), they had all their new gear to show off, and some really interesting forthcoming devices.
Unfortunately Canon’s implementation, like the others, is software-based, so whenever they release the device that this is a prototype of, don’t expect it to drop all those shots onto Flickr from a hotspot (at least not yet, anyway).

In search of geek TV I don’t remember a period of my childhood in which I was not geeky, so I think it’s safe to assume that I was not inadvertantly made a geek by my choice of reading material, like every goofy book by Erich Von Daniken
And since Xers and geeks don’t merely consume pop culture but play with it, analyze it, and regurgitate it in ways that ends up serving as commentary on it, I wouldn’t be at all surprised to find that some wacky gang of 30-somethings were reenacting Battle of the Network Stars somewhere.

 What is Canon?
The term "canon" has religious roots; it refers to a body of rules or principles, and in the case of Christianity, it refers to "a list of books of the Bible officially accepted by the church or religious body as genuine", according to Webster's New World Dictionary.
This agreement is crucial if we are to discuss anything, because while no one can state that your personal definition of canon is "wrong" in any absolute sense (although many will try), discussion about any given sci-fi universe is basically impossible when two people disagree on what is canon and what is not.
George Lucas' policy on canonicity is much more generous than Gene Roddenberry's policy, probably because of his strict control over the behaviour of licensees.

In this light, nerd typically refers to someone who has a devotion to modern-science-based subject matter (science fiction, computers, the internet, etc.), whereas a dork's knowledge would fall in the realm of the social sciences.
Most people would not recognize a modern geek by looking at them, as many do not fit into the old stereotypes of the pocket protector and fl-rimmed glasses with tape in the middle.
