Geelong is the second oldest Australian Rules football club (after the Melbourne Football Club), and ninth oldest football club in the world, having been formed in the Victoria Hotel in 1859.
Geelong was originally based at Corio Oval and originally flew the Geelong banner under the nicknames of the Seagulls, or the Pivotonians.
Geelong is honoured to have the VFL's award for the best and fairest player in a VFL/AFL season named after one of its own, in Charles Brownlow, a Geelong and VFL administrator who died in early 1924.

People coming into Geelong from Melbourne notice the Shell flame first at night (it can be see from the other side of the bay) and for many Geelong residents (myself included) is a welcoming sight when coming back to Geelong after extended trips.
The main branch of the Geelong library is nestled in the base of the park as is a rotunda (gazebo?), which is where carols by candlelight are held every Christmas eve.
