In 1993 urban sprawl forced the de facto recognition that Geelong, Geelong West, Newtown, South Barwon, Bellarine and the shire of Corio were effectively a continuous whole and they were amalgamated to form the City of Greater Geelong which, in 1996, had a population of 175,409.
Geelong has always been a major port and has always had a symbiotic relationship with the fertile agricultural and pastoral districts to the west and north-west of the city - a relationship which is manifest in the form of huge bay-side grain silos.
Geelong, for the moment, was outstripped by Ballarat and Bendigo and was derisively referred to by Melburnians as 'Sleepy Hollow'.

In 1824 the explorers Hume and Hovell reported that the land round Corio Bay was of excellent quality, and the first permanent settlement was established twelve years later, in 1836.
Geelong has preserved some 160 19th C. buildings, which contrast agreeably with the town's uninspired modern architecture.
Particularly notable are the church of SS Peter and Paul and Christ Church (1843; the oldest Anglican church in Victoria); the customs house (1838), the state's oldest surviving wooden building; the imposing Town Hall; and the market hall of 1912, which has taken on a new lease of life as a shopping center.

People coming into Geelong from Melbourne notice the Shell flame first at night (it can be see from the other side of the bay) and for many Geelong residents (myself included) is a welcoming sight when coming back to Geelong after extended trips.
The main branch of the Geelong library is nestled in the base of the park as is a rotunda (gazebo?), which is where carols by candlelight are held every Christmas eve.
