PTUA - Geelong - Fast Train Projects   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
We were concerned that the original proposal for the Geelong line would mainly achieve its high speed and short trip time, by expressing past many important stations.
It requires Geelong trains to be capable of travelling the 43 km between Geelong and Werribee in 16 minutes (express,) which would leave at least 27 minutes (or 60% of travel time) to make the 32 km journey between Werribee and Spencer Street.

PTUA: Geelong Branch - Geelong Fare Reform Discussion Paper
Public transport users in Geelong can currently pay a flat fare of $1.60 for a 2-hour GTS ticket, which can be used on all of Geelong's 'GTS' urban buses and V/Line trains between South Geelong and Lara.
This fare structure discourages rail travellers from using buses to get to railway stations in Geelong (in addition to bus services that fail to connect with trains.) The resulting car trips cause more pollution and congestion within Geelong, and mean that expensive, additional car parking must be provided at stations.
Geelong could be included in Melbourne's existing Zone 3, or (subject to changes to Melbourne's ticketing system) become part of a new Zone 4.

The line was to have been completed by 30 June 1882, but repeated delays arose through the inability of the railway department to supply the rails at the stipulated time, and in sufficient quantity, which caused a great loss to the contractors.
The line to be first constructed was about eighteen miles, which would bring it within twenty miles of the Bay, a branch line to diverge eastward in the direction of Murroon and the Loutit Bay road, terminating within ten miles of the bay.
