Geelong East is a residential area with large public open spaces, adjoining the Geelong central city area.
Further south, across the disused railway line between Geelong and Queenscliff, the St. Albans horse-training property was developed during the 1870s.
In Geelong East proper, a primary school was opened near the Eastern Cemetery in 1929.

Geelong North is a residential and industrial suburb on the west side of Corio Bay.
The railway line (1857) runs beside the road and the Geelong North station or stopping place was opened within a few years.
An independent church opened in 1861, three subdivision estates were opened west of the railway line by 1864, and a school was opened by the church.

The line reached here early in 1902, and the first official train steamed into town on 27 February 1902, with as was usual, a Large banquet held to commemorate the occasion.
It was not long before the value of the railway to this area was recognised, and further local agitation sought an extension to Lavers Hill and Crowes, which was a district approximately 6 miles from the coast.
Main goods along the line was in the early days, as would be expected, timber cut from the extensive forests and logged to the sidings dotted along the line, even though initial expectation was that farm produce would dominate.

In 1993 urban sprawl forced the de facto recognition that Geelong, Geelong West, Newtown, South Barwon, Bellarine and the shire of Corio were effectively a continuous whole and they were amalgamated to form the City of Greater Geelong which, in 1996, had a population of 175,409.
Geelong has always been a major port and has always had a symbiotic relationship with the fertile agricultural and pastoral districts to the west and north-west of the city - a relationship which is manifest in the form of huge bay-side grain silos.
Geelong, for the moment, was outstripped by Ballarat and Bendigo and was derisively referred to by Melburnians as 'Sleepy Hollow'.

A railway line from Geelong to Newport was operating by 1856 (with passengers carried over the river by ferry).
This private line was bought up by the government in 1858 (it was the first government-owned railway line) and extended across the river to Melbourne.
The HMVS Nelson was given to the colony of Victoria by the British government in 1867.

The fleet and goodwill of the Blue Anchor Line was purchased in 1910 and the PandO Branch Line was formed to cover the Australian service.
Controlling interest in the Orient Line was acquired in 1919, along with the British India Steam Navigation Company and control of the Eastern and Australasian Mail Steam Ship Company, which therefore became part of the PandO group.
In 1972 the Strick Line was purchased and in 1974, Princess Cruises was purchased.

The Mount Moriac and Geelong Eastern Cemetery were the only ones to have consecrated ground for Catholic burials so most Catholic burials, even from the outlying areas of Geelong, were performed at these cemeteries.

The head office in Geelong, and workshop and service depot in Warrnambool will be closed, but the maintenance depot in Ballarat will be retained.

Finding a park with vacancies during Xmas holidays along the Great Ocean Road can be to say the least a bit of a nightmare.
The Barwon Camping and Caravan Park is quite a pretty park bearing in mind it is on the fringe of the city and of course it is right across the road from the lovely Barwon River.
Free camping in the area is very light on and there is only one overnight rest area between Melbourne and Geelong and it is very grotty and frightfully noisy.

The solution to that problem is easy, but at the present moment the siding is booked out and the points at either end are clipped, both crossovers on the up and down end are booked out and clipped.

However, V/Line will continue to operate, and I can confirm that all of V/Line’s frequencies will be remaining the same, after many phone calls, and some field research since they pulled out on Tuesday 17/12/2002
These frequencies are used by train drivers across Victoria  to communicate with the V/Line Control Centre (heard on air as “Centrol,” which is located at Spencer St Railway Station, and at every country Victorian station (look for the huge antenna’s)
Many frequencies are low-powered and will only be heard if you are near enough to the transmitter/repeater site.
