  Geihoku - Pine Ridge Resort
The Geihoku region is in the far northwest corner of Hiroshima prefecture.
Geihoku Pine Ridge Resort is a full featured ski resort with rentals (skis, snowboards and clothes), cabins, hotels, a restaurant, cafeterias and a ski school.
In either case, the drive north from Hiroshima on the express way and then on the road to Geihoku takes about 2 hours.

The northwestern part of Hiroshima prefecture, the Geihoku area, is particularly known for kagura, but performances at Itsukushima Shrine are especially notable for the spectacular setting.
Traditionally this stage craft was performed at shrines as part of harvest or other thanksgiving festivals, however it has recently become more artistic; newer kagura performances tend to be more upbeat and fast-paced than those of old.
For both of these events one of the main streets is closed to vehicles and used instead for dance performance and as a place for groups of young girls to walk around displaying their colorful yukata (summer robe) fashions.

Here in Hiroshima we are in the middle of the Inland Sea and there is still plenty of freshly caught fish to eat.
Actually, during my time here, Hiroshima University has followed established precedent and the entire campus has moved to a 'country' setting, well outside Hiroshima City, and right in the midst of an area noted for its water and rice, thus for its sake.

In Hiroshima and Shimane Prefectures there are some good slopes accessible by car or tour bus.
In Hiroshima, there are a 25 ski resorts in all, one of them being Osorakan Ski Jo 082-628-7007, which reportedly gets the biggest dumps of natural snowfall in western Japan.
In Shimane, the prefecture adjacent to Hiroshima, there are a total of seven resorts, but only a few friendly to boarders all throughout the week.

TOKYO OCT 10 JPS -- As U.S. low-altitude flight exercises continue terrifying local residents in the Chugogu region (western Japan), about 100 residents from towns directly affected by the exercises met to discuss the damage from those exercises on October 7 in Geihoku Town in Hiroshima Prefecture.
The U.S. low-flying training frequently take place around Hiroshima and Shimane prefectures, disturbing and even terrifying the residents' lives.
In the symposium organized by Geihoku Town and citizens' groups, the town mayor said that he understands the residents' anxieties about possible accidents during the U.S. military practice.
