History of Philosophy   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
But it was not their philosophy that was to dominate the last half of the 17th century but rather that of René Descartes (1596–1650), a French gentleman who signed himself “Lord of Perron” and who lived the 20 most productive years of his life in the tolerant and hospitable Dutch republic.
He expressed the relation of philosophy as theoretical inquiry to practical consequences in the famous metaphor of the tree of philosophy whose root is metaphysics, whose trunk is physics, and whose branches are, respectively, morals, medicine, and mechanics.
Philosophy, he said, “is the science of the relation of all knowledge to the essential ends of human reason”; and its true aim is both constructive (“to outline the system of all knowledge arising from pure reason”) and critical (“to expose the illusions of a reason that forgets its limits”).

 Absolute Spirit
Philosophy is the unity of art and religion, as the simple intuition and substantial production of art are elevated to self-conscious thought through the separation into parts and the mediation of religion.
This concept of philosophy is the self-thinking idea, truth aware of itself (§ 183), or logic with the significance that it is generality preserved in concrete content.
These appearances are suspended in the idea of philosophy, which has self-knowing reason, the absolutely general, for its middle term a middle which divides itself into spirit and nature, with the former as its presupposition, and the latter as its general extreme.

Geist is understood as a dichotomy as the consciousness particular to individual persons and in and absolute form as "absolute Geist" where Geist is instead understood as a universal consciousness, or universal reason, belonging to the community of interdependent individuals.
Hegel's "God," or absolute Geist (i.e., Geist in its purest and grandest form) is "an essence that needs to manifest itself in the world, and having made itself manifest, to perfect the world in order to perfect itself" (Singer 1983: 83).
For example, our new understanding of Geist as similar to Dharmakaya may create an extended literature from which both concepts and their corresponding philosophies may be better understood: Such implications are not solely for the Philosophy of Right and the Bodhicaryavatara, but perhaps instead for The Phenomenology of Mind and the Dhammapada.

The Kant which normally we accept is the Kantian philosophy of criticism and critique which emerges after the early 1770s and continues to his death.
Yet, Kant's writings prior to 1770 were within the tradition of what Zammito calls popular philosophy which stressed the virtues of German Idealism, a philosophy for the people based on history, geist, aesthetics and metaphysical tenets such as virtue and self-cultivation (Bildung and Bildungsburgertum).
Geist was not limited only to high culture, it also existed in popular culture and what we now call mass culture.

Alexandre Kojève [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy]   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Perhaps the core of Hegel's philosophy is the idea that human history is the history of thought as it attempts to understand itself and its relation to its world.
Enlightenment philosophy, the philosophy of Hegel's own time, is the latest and most sophisticated attempt to reconcile these divisions through reason alone, to freely find man's place amongst others and the universe as a whole.
It is possible to trace many connections within French philosophy that owe varying degrees of debt to Kojève, given that his distinctive reinterpretation of Hegel was key for the French reception of Hegel's thought.

 Phenomenology
This field of philosophy is then to be distinguished from, and related to, the other main fields of philosophy: ontology (the study of being or what is), epistemology (the study of knowledge), logic (the study of valid reasoning), ethics (the study of right and wrong action), etc.
In recent philosophy of mind, the term "phenomenology" is often restricted to the characterization of sensory qualities of seeing, hearing, etc.: what it is like to have sensations of various kinds.
In his Logical Investigations (1900-01) Husserl outlined a complex system of philosophy, moving from logic to philosophy of language, to ontology (theory of universals and parts of wholes), to a phenomenological theory of intentionality, and finally to a phenomenological theory of knowledge.

In the late 1920s the sociological and linguistic turn signalled by Voloshinov's article on discourse had begun to form into a distinct school of thought in which language was the index of social relations and embodiment of ideological worldview.
Voloshinov firmly establishes the sign-bound nature of consciousness and the shifting nature of the language system, but instead of viewing the subject as fragmented by the reality of difference, he poses each utterance to be a microcosm of social conflict.

 G. W. F. Hegel
Hegel's philosophy has engendered much controversy over the years such that one overarching summary of his work is very difficult to produce.
Early on in his work, Hegel's close connection to romantic trends in philosophy lead him to criticize the "positivity" of the orthodox religions of his era in order to urge a move toward a more romantic vision of religion--toward a "folk" sensibility relying less on dogma and abstract claims of church authorities.
