In the present paper I compare chromosomal evolution in the monophyletic Diplodactylinae and that in the possibly polyphyletic Gekkoninae, to test whether the tribal subdivision made by Kluge (1983) is valid, or whether this is a far more heterogeneous group as Russell and Moffatt proposed.
In contrast, an analysis of 74 species from the Gekkoninae shows that eight distinct putative ancestral karyomorphs are present, 2n=32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44 and 46, each of which is acrocentric or telocentric.
These data suggest that the Gekkoninae are a polyphyletic assemblage, and group comparisons indicate that there is some agreement with the morphogroups proposed by Russell (1976).

Israel harbors up to 12 species of Gekkoninae: Of 3 Mediterranean taxa, 2 Occur only in northern Israel; of 6 desert species, 4 are Saharan and inhabit SW Israel; 1 is local in the Levant; and 1 species is endemic to Mt. Hermon.
These species vary in their distributional range within Israel, in their abundance and ease of collection within that range, and in their hardiness in captivity.

:In general, geckos may be divided into 2 primary groups: species with immovable, or fixed, eyelids (Gekkoninae, Teratoscincinae, and Diplodactylinae), and species which possess a movable eyelid (Aleuroscalabotinae and Eublepharinae).
Geckos which possess fixed eyelids can be further divided on the basis of the presence (arboreal), or lack of presence (generally terrestrial), of sub-digital lamellae.
