Gelatinous cube - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is an ooze of mindless, gelatinous matter in the shape of a cube that slides from one place to another, absorbing everything in its path.
Despite its popularity (or perhaps because of it), the gelatinous cube is also widely known as one of the sillier role-playing monsters.
Because of the cube's transparency, it may be mistaken for another monster or even not seen at all until it is very close.

 Slack 'n' Hash - Gelatinous Cubes - page 1 of 4
The gelatinous cube is a quintessential part of the dungeoneering experience: as vital as the pit trap; the 10' × 10' square room guarded by an orc; the warren of narrow corridors.
On average, the density of a gelatinous cube is 14.815 pounds per cubic foot (237.311 kilograms per square metre); just over a quarter of the density of water.
The gelatinous cube propels itself forward by a kind of controlled toppling: by agitating its lower surface the cube partially liquefies, allowing it to glide along.

Many myths about the gelatinous cube were dispelled, when the National Geographic issue featuring them made it to news stands in 1986, bringing this gentle and elusive creature to the public eye.
The Gelatinous cube is a large invertebrate native to North America and Mordor.
This is due to the urban legend that baby cubes flushed down toilets grow up into giant cubes in the sewer systems of large cities and the Dungeons of Despair.

Since the gelatinous cubes are dungeon dwelling critters I made a base that would resemble stones when painted up.
Since I wanted the final cube to be crystal clear I had to take care of making sure that the clay had a perfectly smooth finish to it.
I pour the clear resin into the cube mold and then I invert the base so the painted end is facing down and place it on top of the cube mold as a lid.

 Modeling/Sculpting Project: Gelatinous Cube
I was inspired by a pair of gelatinous cube miniatures that people constructed out of clear resin (see here and here) and decided to do my own.
One of the othe gelatinous cube designers mentioned that the clay he used could be smoothed out with water once the model was finished and dried to give the final result a nice clear and smooth texture.
Now I'm working on a new cube prototype that is (1) a slightly smaller so it fits in the corridors a little better and (2) slightly concave on the exposed faces (like this one) to make it look more dynamic.

Treasure is sometimes swept up by a gelatinous cube as the creature travels along a cavern floor; any metals, gems, or jewelry are carried in the monster's body until they can be ejected as indigestible.
The gelatinous cube is sometimes encouraged to stay in a certain area for its scavenging abilities, and is preferred over other jellies and oozes since its square shape does not allow it to slither under doors and into areas in which it is not desired.

Described by survivors as a 10x10x10 Cube of gelatinous, transparent, bluish goo, this creature undulates slowly through the Sewer passages sweeping up any objects (and mortals) it encounters in its path.
The Cube has been known to roll completely over those foolish enough to stand before it, devouring their possessions, sapping their strength, and causing them to ingest some of the gelatinous goo- which is poisonous to all known races.
In fact, even those lucky enough to triumph over solitary Cubes (none are known who have faced multiple Cubes) have been frequently forced to rest for extreme lengths of time- so drained of energy that they must sleep for many weeks.
