It followed Gelimer's defeat at the Battle of Ad Decimum, and eliminated the power of the Vandals for good, completing the "Reconquest" of North Africa under the Emperor Justinian I.
After being ejected from Carthage, Gelimer set up at Bulla Regia[?] in Numidia, about 100 miles to the west of Carthage (at what is now the western border of modern Tunisia).
Gelimer realized that his kingdom was lost, and attempted to flee to Spain where some Vandals still remained, not having followed the main forces when they crossed into North Africa years earlier.

 Gelimer
Gelimer (480-553), King of the Vandals and Alans (530-534) was the last ruler of the north African Kingdom of the Vandals.
Gelimer and the Vandals put up a stout resistance to the Roman general Belisarius and his army, but were defeated twice in 533, at Ad Decimium and Ticameron.
In 534, realizing he had no chance of regaining his kingdom, Gelimer surrendered to Belisarius and accepted the Romans' offer of vast estates within the empire.

FOURTH BOOK OF LOST SWORDS: FARSLAYER'S STORY
The hermit Gelimer was snug under blankets and skins in his lonely bed, and when the half-intelligent watchbeast came to wake him he turned over with a faint groan and tried to pull the furs up over his head.
Gelimer grimaced under the hood of his anorak, and turned to a small lean-to shed built against the outer surface of the huge stump.
Gelimer hoisted and wrestled his client, and of course the omnipresent package, out of the sled and through the small entry hall, doored and curtained at both ends for winter, that pierced the thickness of his house's circular wooden wall.

CHAPTER - CONQUESTS OF JUSTINIAN, CHARACT OF BALISARIUS
The obstinacy of Gelimer at length yielded to reason and necessity; the solemn assurances of safety and honorable treatment were ratified in the emperor’s name, by the ambassador of Belisarius; and the king of the Vandals descended from the mountain.
Gelimer slowly advanced: he was clad in a purple robe, and still maintained the majesty of a king.
The religious scruples of Gelimer, who adhered to the Arian heresy, were incompatible with the dignity of senator or patrician: but he received from the emperor an ample estate in the province of Galatia, where the abdicated monarch retired, with his family and friends, to a life of peace, of affluence, and perhaps of content.

Ten miles from Carthage, the forces of Gelimer (who had just executed Hilderic) and Belisarius finally met at the Battle of Ad Decimium (Tenth Milestone).
Gelimer had chosen his position well and was hammering Belisarius' forces along the main road.
A second victory, at the Battle of Ticameron later in the year caused Gelimer to surrender early in 534 at Mt. Papua, permitting the lost Roman provinces of north Africa to be restored the empire.

Medieval Sourcebook: Procopius: The Reconquest of Africa, 534
Belisarius, upon reaching Byzantium with Gelimer [last king of the Vandals, captured by Belisarius in 534] and the Vandals, was counted worthy to receive such honours, as in former times were assigned to those generals of the Romans who had won the greatest and most noteworthy victories.
And there were slaves in the triumph, among whom was Gelimer himself, wearing some sort of a purple garment upon his shoulders, and all his family, and as many of the Vandals as were very tall and fair of body.
However, Gelimer was by no means enrolled among the patricians, since he was unwilling to change from the faith of Arius.

In the mean while, Gelimer himself, ignorant of the event, and misguided by the windings of the hills, inadvertently passed the Roman army, and reached the scene of action where Ammatas had fallen.
Gelimer retired with hasty steps towards the desert of Numidia: but he had soon the consolation of learning that his private orders for the execution of Hilderic and his captive friends had been faithfully obeyed.

The Battle of Ticameron took place on December 15, 533 between the armies of the Vandals, commanded by King Gelimer, and his brother Tzazon, and the eastern Roman Empire (later referred to as the Byzantine Empire), under the command of General Belisarius.
He knew that in his current state he would not be able to face Belisarius's forces, so he sent messengers to his brother Tzazo who was currently campaigning in Sardinia.
Tzazon and his army joined Gelimer early in December, at which point Gelimer felt his forces were strong enough to take the offensive.
