Roman Emperors - DIR Usurpers under Elgabal
Although Gellius Maximus was a lowly physician's son, he achieved the status of Roman senator.
Elagabalus, however, quelled the revolt and ordered Gellius Maximus put to death.

Maximus is our only source for such "rivals." Yet by taking his comparison in a naively literal fashion, there has sprung up the widespread vision not just of Sappho's Academy but of a Lesbos littered with warring boarding schools.
And, we should note, even Maximus does not speak of "girls" and "boys," but of "men" and "women." It is as wrong to deduce that Sappho was surrounded only by prepubescent girls as it would be to deduce that Socrates never spoke to anyone except males under the age of eighteen.

Elagabalus was delayed in Asia Minor while brief revolts by the Legio III Gallica, under the leadership of the senator Verus, and the IV Scythica, under command of Gellius Maximus, was crushed.
Elagabalus was the son of Sextus Varius Marcellus and Julia Soaemias Bassiana.
Elagabalus declared the date of the victory at Antioch to be the beginning of his reign and assumed the imperial titles without prior Senatorial approval, which violated tradition but was a common practice among 2nd century emperors nonetheless.

Elagabalus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Elagabalus was delayed in Asia Minor while brief revolts by the Legio III Gallica, under the leadership of the senator Verus, and the IV Scythica, under command of Gellius Maximus, were crushed.
Elagabalus' family held hereditary rights to the priesthood of the sun god El-Gabal, of whom Elagabalus was the high priest at Emesa (modern Homs) in Syria.
Elagabalus and Julia Soaemias were murdered (according to the Historia Augusta, in the Emperor's latrine) on March 11, 222; their bodies were dragged through the streets of Rome and the Cloaca Maxima, and ultimately thrown into the Tiber.

 Classics Log 9807b - Message Number 143
I had associated the trabea with augurs because Virgil seems to connect the trabea and the lituus in a rather odd phrase in his depiction of Picus in Aeneid 7 (odd enough to be criticized by Hyginus, as reported by Gellius 5.8); but it's nice to see both Virgil and Augustus sharing antiquarian concerns.
Can a Pontifex Maximus be depicted holding a lituus, or is a man with his toga over his head and a lituus in his hand both a pontifex and an augur?
According to Zanker, the simpuvium (a kind of ladle) is the distinctive mark of a pontifex, but this doesn't seem to turn up in portraits, on coins, etc. as often as the lituus.

Apex (hat) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sulpicius was deprived of the priesthood, only because the apex fell from his head whilst he was sacrificing (Valerius Maximus i.1 ยง5).
The flamines were forbidden by law to go into public, or even into the open air without the apex (Gellius x.15), and hence we find the expression of alicui apicem dialem imponere used as equivalent to the appointment of a Flamen Dialis (Livy vi.41).
The essential part of the apex, to which alone the name properly belonged, was a pointed piece of olive-wood, the base of which was surrounded with a lock of wool.

The legion disappears from the sources after 219, when their commander, Gellius Maximus, rebelled against Elagabalus and proclaimed himself emperor, only to be defeated by Elagabalus.
Between 181 and 183 AD, the commander of the Eastern legions was Septimius Severus, who become emperor relying on his legions power.
In the year of the four emperors ( 69 AD), the legion, like the rest of the Eastern army, sided with Vespasian from day one.
