  Gelug Tradition
Ganden, Drepung, and Sera became the three principal monasteries of the Gelukpa school and were the lineage's primary seats of power.
Gelukpa monastic institutions grew and flourished, and these began to attract students from all over the Tibetan cultural area.
The fifth Dalai Lama (the Great Fifth as he is usually called) proved to be an able statesman as well as an important religious figure, and he consolidated the rule of the Dalai Lamas, who continued to be recognized as the rulers of Tibet until the Chinese annexation of Tibet in 1959.

Candidates for the geshe hlarampa degree are examined in the Potala by the greatest scholars of the Gelukpa order: the Dalai Lama, the throne holder of Ganden, the senior tutor of the Dalai Lama, the junior tutor, and seven assistant tutors, the “Jangtse Choje” and the “Sharpa Choje” (413).
The seven main Gelukpa monastic colleges appoint one tutor apiece to be part of this last examination.

The Dalai Lama is considered to be the head of the Gelukpa school of Tibetan Buddhism (the numerically largest Tibetan Buddhist sect).
The Nyingma school is not as strict or as monastic as the Gelukpa school and are a much less hierachical sect of Tibetan Buddhism.
The term “Dalai” is actually a Mongolian rather than Tibetan word for the head of the Gelukpa school) In his writings and speeches he humbly refers to himself merely as the fallible monk Tenzin Gyatso.

I think the reason is that unlike many, or most Gelukpa scholars, he doesn’t look on himself as a Gelukpa even though his main training has been in Gelukpa.
He is a Gelukpa lama—the Dalai Lama comes out of Drepung monastery—but in his role as Dalai Lama he does not consider himself associated with a sect.
Most Gelukpa lamas are particularly concerned with discriminating systems, almost to a degree that bothers me. Whereas you can see that his primary concern is with the topics themselves, and he uses many different systems to talk about one topic.
