Gemini 8 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It was the 6th manned Gemini flight, the 12th manned American flight and the 22nd spaceflight of all time (includes X-15 flights over 100 km).
It had planned for Gemini 8 to land in the Atlantic, but that was supposed to be three days later on.
Had Gemini 8 landed in the western Atlantic Ocean (the scheduled recovery area) as planned, the U. Navy Atlantic Recovery Fleet's prime recovery ship was the carrier, USS Boxer.

Project Gemini - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The original intention was for Gemini to use a paraglider instead of a parachute, and the crew to be seated upright controlling the forward motion of the craft before its landing.
Gemini is also the name of the third constellation of the Zodiac and its twin stars, Castor and Pollux.
Gemini was the first American manned spacecraft to include an onboard computer, the Gemini Guidance Computer, to facilitate management and control of mission maneuvers.

Gemini 8 marked the first successful dual launch and docking with the Gemini Agena Target Vehicle (GATV), completing the world's first on-orbit docking of two spacecraft.
The Gemini 8 GATV was launched as the second stage of an Atlas-Agena rocket at 10:00 a.m.
Docking of the Gemini 8 spacecraft and the GATV was successfully completed at a mission elapsed time of 6 hours, 33 minutes.

Note lack of a docking hatch in Gemini is accommodated by having docking collar as large as the base of the Gemini re-entry vehicle itself.
Truth be told, a Gemini launched atop a Titan 3E or Saturn IVB Centaur could have accomplished a circumlunar flight as early as 1966 and, using earth orbit rendezvous techniques, a landing at least a year before Apollo.
Gemini was to have continued to fly into the 1970's as the return capsule of the USAF Manned Orbiting Laboratory program.

 Gemini 8
Gemini VIII's problems were certainly the most frustrating of any Gemini had yet encountered.
But Gemini VIII's failure had forced the astronauts to resort to a last-ditch mode for attitude control before the ground crews had a chance to provide the options that might have allowed the flight to go on.
There was still hope that the Agena for Gemini VIII might be used as a passive target for Gemini IX or X. References: 1, 2, 5, 6, 26, 33, 60.

Gemini VIII would include practice on rendezvous and docking maneuvers and a space walk that could last as long as one Earth orbit, about 95 minutes.
Gemini VIII would have three periods of extravehicular activity (EVA) - two in daylight, one in darkness - and would undock during EVA with the right hatch snubbed against the umbilical guide and the astronaut strapped into the adapter section.
Gemini X would include a dual rendezvous with a parked Agena and the retrieval of the S-10 experiment after undocking with the new Agena, using EVA.

Welcome to the Public Entrance of the Gemini Observatory
The Gemini Observatory is an international partnership comprised of two 8.1-meter telescopes (each telescope has a main mirror over 26 feet across.) One telescope is located on Hawaii's Mauna Kea, and the other on Chile's Cerro Pachón.
Gemini's ability to penetrate clouds of galactic dust and gas take Gemini to the core of our own galaxy and others - to provide new insights on the violent events that dwell in these areas.
Gemini is an international partnership managed by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy under a cooperative agreement with the National Science Foundation.

Gemini Mirror Is First With Silver Lining
Tests done at Gemini with dozens of small mirror samples over the past few years show that the silvered coating applied to the Gemini mirror should remain highly reflective and usable for at least a year between recoatings.
Gemini has the lowest total thermal emissivity of any large astronomical telescope on the ground, with values under 4% prior to receiving its silver coating.
The result is a significant increase in the quality and amount of Gemini's infrared data, which allows detection of objects that would otherwise be lost in the noise generated by heat radiating from the telescope.

Gemini VIII successfully docked with Gemini Agena target vehicle GATV-6 hours 34 min after liftoff.

The objective of this experiment was to determine the effects of subgravity on development in a gravity-oriented biological system, by determining the effect of weightlessness on the ability of fertilized frog eggs to divide normally, and to differentiate and form a normal embryo.
Several dozen frogs were injected with pituitary gland extract 48 hours prior to launch to ensure ovulation at the desired time, and the best eggs from two were selected for flight and fertilized by immersion in a sperm suspension made by maceration of frog testes in spring water.
Early stages of cleavage (2, 8, 16, 32 and 64 cells) were successfully obtained; however, the later cleavage and developmental stages were not reached.

The problem arose again and when the yaw and roll rates became too high the crew shut the main Gemini reaction control system down and activated and used both rings of the reentry control system to stablize the spacecraft.

The real-time control system for the Gemini 8-m telescopes project will be formed from the integration of diverse work packages, each responsible for operation of separate physical systems.
Since the work packages cover the entire range of observatory control issues, including primary mirror support, enclosure control, and instrument controllers it is expected that the required functionality of each can be quite different and present different interface requirements.
To solve this integration problem it was decided to identify a commercial package that was flexible and powerful enough to implement all Gemini real-time control work packages.
