For almost four years, comic shops went Disney-less; finally, in late 2002, the final agreements were made and Gemstone announced its plans to relaunch the line.
Gemstone is also aware of the growing interest in both comic shops and mass market bookstores in trade paperbacks and graphic novels, and they’re working towards a line of trade paperbacks.
A focal point of the Gemstone line will be the work of Carl Barks, undoubtedly the most famous Disney comics creator—but there are many other talents whose work will be featured in Gemstone’s line.

Disney comic books are returning to the U.S. The local comic book stores have been missing an icon since February of 1999, when Gladstone Comics ceased publication of new Disney Comics.
A source close to Gemstone told THE PULSE that it was assumed the bulk of the content would be translated reprints from foreign editions appearing since titles ceased publication in the US as well as some all new source materials.
Gemstone's new Disney offerings are expected to be available to the comics and book market in English-language editions throughout the United States, Canada, and the U.S. Territories and Possessions by early 2003.

Steve Geppi has recently announced that Gemstone Comics has acquired the license to publish Disney comics in the U.S. An extensive interview can be found at ICv2 (http://www.icv2.com/articles/home/2128.html), which I urge you to read in its entirety.
Dell Comics at a time was the biggest comic publisher in the U.S., thanks to having access to one of the best newsstand distributors in the country, and to having the licenses to a multitude of well-known characters and series from cartoons and television.
This is followed by the 250th issue of The Comics Journal, with a Gary Panter interview, an Herge interview excerpt, and a transcription of a convention panel with John Stanley and Carl Barks.

Gemstone Publishing and Walt Disney are teaming up to republish classic monthly and bi-monthly Disney comic books, the companies said today.
These Disney comics will be available at major booksellers and wholesalers including Barnes and Noble, Borders, Walden Books, Amazon.com and Baker and Taylor, as well as specialty stores.
The comics will be available through subscription at www.gemstonecomics.com, and can also be found using the comic shop locator, which directs consumers to the nearest comic specialty shop.

We were so happy to see everyone turning out for their free comics - and hey, even some of the comics themselves were pretty neat.
The only thing in the comic that got me excited was the ad for a book by Alan Moore about his theories on writing comics.
This is an expensive comic, but a lengthy, thought-provoking read, and the start of what looks to be a very strong mini-series.

Jippes' ongoing project was begun some years ago and some of his early work was reproduced toward the end of the Gladstone run of comics.
Now Gemstone has taken up the mantle and will print the remaining work Jippes has done to date, and will continue to do so into the future, until the project is complete.

My whole litany, even before I started negotiating the license, was that one day we are going to cut our legs off if we don't have comics for kids to find when they are five to eight or nine years old, so that they can get used to comics like you and I did.
My mother brought home comics--they were Disney comics, Archie comics, Harvey comics.
Different, though there may be exceptions from time to time, because one of the things that I understand from talking to the production people as well as to the people from Egmont is that some of the artists draw specifically for that smaller format rather than the prestige format.

But the only issues I see with Gemstone reprinting PK material is that it pretty much deviates from the rest of the known Duck Universe in relation to Barks/Rosa (that might matter to some purists), and has a slightly different target audience.
Gemstone could publish all their titles for *years* without once using a reprint if they wanted to.
Most comic shops probably aren't as good with their prices as mine is (if they have Disney back issues at all, some I've been to don't).

I also really liked the new characters which is a first for a Disney Comics story which ALWAYS have in the past been infamous for their forgettable guest stars outside of the Big Four (Barks, Rosa, Van Horn and Gottfredson).
I often feel Donald's persona is so vastly different in the comics than it is in the cartoons (probably because of his bigger vocabulary) that I don't think of the shorts as "real" as the complex character Carl Barks, Don Rosa, William Van Horn and Romano Scarpa have made him.
Here's what I think of Mouse comics in general: if someone would draw Mickey retro-style - in other words, the Mouse as he was in the 1930's, button eyes and so forth - in a new comic story, I would buy that story.

This comic is all new longer stories for Mickey, Donald, and Scrooge.
Although they are looking in to purchasing the rights as no other company is using them.
