  Gedun Gyatso, 2nd Dalai Lama - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gedun Gyatso Palzangpo (Wylie transliteration: Dge-'dun Rgya-mtsho), also Gendun Gyatso and sometimes Gednun Gyatso ("Sublimely Glorious Ocean of Spiritual Aspirants", layname: Yonten Phuntsok) (1475 1541) was the second Dalai Lama.
He was a renowned scholar and composer of mystical poetry, who traveled widely to extend Gelugpa influence, and became abbot of the largest Gelugpa monastery, Drepung, which from this time on was closely associated with the Dalai Lamas.
When the high priests came looking for the incarnation of the previous Dalai Lama, they found him when he was 17 years old.

Damchoe Gyatso (27), Jigme Tendar (29), Phuntsog (25) and Damchoe Kalden (31), believed to be still in detention, were accused of producing pro-independence posters and leaflets containing prayers for the long life of the Panchen Lama whose birthplace is about 75 km from Kumbum.
They criticised the Dalai Lama as having "confounded every established procedure by unilaterally proclaiming his own choice of the reincarnated child" and said, "Fortunately this irregularity was quickly denounced by the central government".

On September 22nd 2003 Dorjee Tsephel from Chabcha County in Tsolho Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in the Qinghai Province was arrested for composing a song in honor of the Dalai Lama.
The officials later summoned all the monks and declared Choeden Rinzin’s possession of the Dalai Lama’s portrait and the banned Tibetan national flag as “crime.” The officials also warned the gathering of around 500 monks not to participate in activities that “split the motherland”.
Tibetans returning from exile, especially highly respected Lamas, are regarded with suspicion by Chinese authorities for their allegiance to the Dalai Lama or for presumed involvement in political activities, which China labels as attempts of “endangering State security”.
