Parsons was born in Los Angeles on September 4, 1944, and grew up mostly in the Mojave Desert.
Parsons stuck around until 1972, with high points including the albums The Ballad of Easy Rider and Untitled, and then left for a solo career.
In 1974, Parsons took a break from his solo career to join another groundbreaking country-rock group, the Flying Burrito Brothers; he appeared on 1975's Flying Again and 1976's Airborne before a wrist injury forced him to take several years off of music.

Meridian Green’s association with Gene Parsons began in 1986, when Parsons was still machining all of the parts for his StringBender mechanism by hand, except for the unit’s pull hub, which, due to the complexity of the machining required, he farmed out.
Parsons’ original mechanism requires that the guitar be routed, and then all of the parts installed into positions carved into the wood of the rout — a complex and labor-intensive procedure.
White and multi-instrumentalist Gene Parsons fashioned a steel guitar-inspired mechanism that raised the B string a whole step when downward pressure was applied on the strap, tweaking and modifying their invention until it was stable and consistent.

Gene Clark was too nervous to stay in the Byrds for long, even though the publishing royalties he was receiving were mammoth.
What Gene Clark and Gram Parsons did between the years of 1966 and 1974 was to parse the difference between Bob Dylan and Elvis, mine the available knowledge of their era, and reinvent the pop and rock format for their peers.
For an appreciation of Parsons it is important to keep this cultural and stylistic framework in mind, even if his beautiful and roundly magnetic voice seems to deny any notion that he could be at all self-aware or calculating.
