He admits that nothing but his anxiety to nourish his own reputation on the screen prevented him from turning tail when he found that one of the lionesses had been torn from her cubs for the shooting of the scene.

NFC had no interest in continuing Pollar in the role of Tarzan (particularly since Numa announced it would only loan him for an unheard-of $800 a week), but it did hire Karla Schramm to return as Jane.
Pollar had quit acting and returned to firefighting, Tabler had proven himself spectacularly ill-suited for the role; and early talk of having Searle assume the part was now moot.
Somewhere, Frank Merrill swings from the treetops, Gene Pollar leads an elephant charge, and Elmo Lincoln wrestles a man killer lion in a fight to the death.

Karla Schramm - Biography - Moviefone
After playing a bit part in D.W. Griffith's Broken Blossoms (1919), Schramm replaced one Evelyn Farriss in the role of Jane opposite former New York fireman Gene Pollar's Lord of the Jungle in The Revenge of Tarzan (1920).
Apparently, Miss Farriss got so frightened of the prospect of appearing opposite sundry wildlife fauna that she declined the opportunity and the less fearful Karla became a last-minute replacement.
Pollar didn't exactly live up to his billing and that the seven-reel Numa Pictures release proved a rather embarrassing display of ineptness, Schramm survived unscathed and was retained as Jane in the serial The Son of Tarzan (1920).

The Revenge of Tarzan - 1920
His replacement was a tall, stocky, athletic New York fireman with no acting experience named Joseph C Pohler, who became Gene Pollar.
Goldwyn changed the name to The Revenge of Tarzan believing that The Return of Tarzan gave the impression it was a re-release of an earlier Elmo Lincoln picture.
In an interview in the May 1934 edition of Screen Play magazine ERB had the last word on Pollar's performance as Tarzan - "As an actor, Gene was a great fireman." (Essoe and Fury)

Markey made two movies as Jane--the other was "The Romance of Tarzan," also in 1918--then was replaced by Karla Schramm.
(Rumor has it that the second Jane was supposed to be actress Evelyn Fariss, but she weasled out when she learned they were going to use real lions in her scenes.) Lincoln was replaced by a non-actor they named Gene Pollar, a real-life fireman.
Schramm made two more pictures as Jane, but hardly anybody alive today has ever seen them.
