Gene Shay produces XPN's weekly folk show and is the founder and original emcee of the Philadelphia Folk Festival.
Gene has been deemed "The dean of American folk DJs" by The Philadelphia Daily News and "the grandfather of Philadelphia Folk Music" by The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The Festival is hosted by Gene Shay and is a three-day extravaganza of traditional and contemporary folk performers, dance, crafts, camping, and children's activities.

Shay was the first one to bring Bob Dylan to Philadelphia in 1963 for his debut concert, and as an advertising, writer-producer, Gene wrote the original radio commercials for Woodstock.

Shay was my first Regional Winner and we had a great time showing.
The answer is Shay was the work of 3 years of my breeding program in which a stud I had used to lock in type, was discovered to also be passing on a Liver defect to most of his offspring.
Shay's father, CH NewDestiny For Maximum Effect, was also affected by the liver problem, as were several of my breeding cats.

Shay started out rehearsing what would ultimately become his radio career at the breakfast table when he was a little boy, using a spoon to practice his announcing from a milk carton, or using a hairbrush to interview his sisters.
After graduating from Temple in l957, Shay went into the Army and wound up in Frankfurt, Germany, where he worked as a DJ and staff announcer for the American Forces Network-Europe, hosting such programs as “Music in the Air” over one of the largest network operations in the world.

When Christine came onstage, she proudly announced that unlike most of the performers, she would *not* be doing a song Gene had requested, and instead said she would sing a song about the island vacation that she hoped Gene would give himself soon.
And DJ Ed Sciacky correctly noted that Gene created a whole style of "how to talk to a radio audience" that influenced a generation of local DJ's.
It was a big lovefest, a great tribute to a great man. I just wish I had picked up one of the Gene Shay bobble head dolls in the lobby...

 Rambles: Tom Russell, Modern Art
In the early spring of 2003, prior to the release of Modern Art, I had the pleasure of hearing an advance copy of the title track played on folk icon Gene Shay's Philadelphia radio program.
First impressions unfortunately can be misleading, and I'm sorry to report that the songs on this disc are neither clever nor appealing.
I'm almost tempted to enjoy the unintentional irony that Russell's poke at modern art is contained in an album that relates to "real music" in much the same way that some folks think modern art relates to "real art." Unfortunately, the most artistic thing about this Modern Art is the buffalo painting on the cover.
